June Bloom

In Bloom — not just for Mother Nature or Nirvana fans anymore — is tonight's early celebration of James Joyce's Bloomsday, which actually falls on June 16. Never let the calendar get in the way of a chance to get drunk, wander and make horrible puns! Artist and raconteur Gerry Fialka hosts this observation of one of literature's most enduring temporal touchstones with rare Joyce-related film clips and live readings courtesy of the Marshall McLuhan Finnegans Wake Reading Club. Although it may take a literal Ulysses to tackle the weighty, labyrinthine saga that is Ulysses, here you'll enjoy only the highest of highlights on your way to understanding the themes of rootlessness, longing and belonging. And, if you're new to these particular proceedings, you may just find someone who shares your affinity for the odd and the Joycean — which sort of evens out all that longing and belonging in the end.
