Still Blowing Out Candles in the Wind

There have been so many celebrations of Bob Dylan's birthday lately, it feels as if he's been turning 70 for about a year. Which, I guess, technically is true. Tonight's bonne fete to Bob, titled Forever Young, falls on his actual date of birth. First up is a screening of The Other Side of the Mirror, Murray Lerner's fine documentary of three Newport Folk Festivals featuring Dylan, spanning 1963 through '65. One gets to watch his evolution from callow Midwestern field hand to dark prince of hip. Afterward, Princeton Professor Sean Wilentz and Rolling Stone's Mikal Gilmore will discuss the film, as well as Napoleon in rags and the language that he used. Gilmore's 2008 collection Stories Done has some fascinating hangin'-with-Bob stories, while last year's Bob Dylan in America, by Wilentz, is simply one of the best books about the man ever — and I've read 769 of 'em.
