The Right Focus
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Never do those words ring more true than when you're looking at a photograph taken by a child living with cancer. Take a rare glimpse inside the world of 13 children who are in various stages of the illness at the Pablove Shutterbugs Show at Kopeikin Gallery. Rather than suffering and desperation, expect to see images that convey hope. Music-video executive producers Catherine Berclaz and Jo Ann Thrailkill developed Shutterbugs through the Pablove Foundation, which was founded by Thrailkill and her husband, Jeff Castelaz, who lost their 6-year-old son, Pablo, to Wilms’ tumor in 2009. "Genius" is the only way to describe the idea of putting cameras into the hands of children with cancer to take their minds off their illness, relieve their anxiety and give them something to look forward to. Tonight's show presents the photos of students who have participated in eight weeks of classes -- conducted in groups on weekends, during chemo and radiation treatments and at bedsides -- taught by top rock and fine-arts photographers, photo instructors and cinematographers who prefer to remain anonymous. While KCRW DJ Chris Douridas spins tunes, silent and live auctions will take place for students' works as well as images from pros including Weegee, Bruce Davidson, Chapman Baehler, David Levinthal, Zoe Crosher and Piper Ferguson. Proceeds benefit the Shutterbugs program.
