Maniac de La Mancha

Before the film Black Swan devolved into a ballet horror film, director Darren Aronofsky's exploration of the porosity between reality, imagination and psychosis closely resembled the concerns that has made choreographer Boris Eifman both artistically significant and hugely popular internationally and in his company's four prior Southland visits. Cinematic in style, passionate in both choreography and what he selects as his subject matter, Eifman returns with his Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg to unveil his Don Quixote. Expect this reinterpretation of Miguel Cervantes' literary Don Quixote and Marius Petipa's three-act ballet to take the tale of the knight-errant driven by love and madness into distinctly Eifman territory, but hopefully without lapsing into a literal monster movie in pointe shoes.
