Don't Say No, It's the End of the World
Seeing as how LAX, downtown and Dodger Stadium are tagged as potential bio-terror targets, and that FEMA signed a plan in preparation for a 7.8-plus quake last December (expecting "massive casualties ... and infrastructure failure"), you'd think it would be City Hall who's telling us to "Be Prepared, Not Scared." But no. Incorporated in 1913, Banning ("a friendly and wholesome place to work and raise a family") began as a stagecoach stop between Arizona territory and L.A. Nearly a century later, the inland community is looking ahead, and welcoming one and all in wacky fonts to learn how "to survive earthquakes, bio-terrorism, floods, fires and accidents!" Last year, more than 900 folks attended Banning's Disaster Survival Expo to receive enlightenment from more than 40 vendors, agencies and organizations. More hands-on demonstrations are expected this year, as well as raffle prizes, handouts, interactive exercises, games, food, giveaways and live music — because we all need a theme song for the end of the world.
