The British writing team of Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais has been a prolific force since the mid-'60s debut of their U.K. sitcom The Likely Lads, in addition to many other TV series and feature films. Their comedy tends toward the broad and crowd-pleasing but almost always attracts the sort of talent that generates truly satisfying final results, evident in the pair of music-themed comedies the duo penned in the '90s. Alan Parker's The Commitments has lost none of its charm, a tale of poor Irish musicians banding together and dreaming of stardom, made classic by the raw performances both dramatic and musical from a group of talented unknowns (including future Swell Season front man Glen Hansard). Meanwhile, Brian Gibson's Still Crazy is one of the most underrated comedies of the period, an aging-rockers-reunion piece with real heart and a superlative cast including Stephen Rea, Timothy Spall and a preening and spacey Bill Nighy at his scene-stealing best. Clement and La Frenais will appear for a Q&A at tonight's double feature.
