Scott Svonkin's Personality Problem

How did a food-spewing bully get major Democratic backing to run for Community College trustee?

San Gabriel School Board member Scott Svonkin pounds on tables or car windows when he is displeased. He yells with his mouth full of food, which sometimes shoots out. He dramatically rolls his eyes at the very San Gabriel residents who three years ago elected him.

Now he's seeking election to a vastly more powerful post, that of Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees — the board accused of wasting tens of millions of dollars in bond money on ineptly handled campus construction.

Despite Svonkin's endorsements from dozens of Democratic politicians, in March he was forced into a May 17 runoff by Long Beach teacher and San Pedro Neighborhood Council member Lydia Gutierrez. Among San Gabriel voters, who know him best, 78 percent chose somebody other than Svonkin.

The community college election is often a yawner. But a charged debate is under way about the college board's incompetence in the wake of a Los Angeles Times series, "Billions to Spend," detailing costly fiascos under veteran trustees Mona Fields, Sylvia Scott-Hayes, Nancy Pearlman, Georgia Mercer and Kelly C. Candaele — who have spent a combined 61 years on the little-watched board.

Svonkin, who often comes across as affable and well-spoken, is backed by Democrats including U.S. Congress members Judy Chu and Henry Waxman, plus the entire L.A. City Council.

But three current and former San Gabriel Unified School District board members — Lee Freeman, Denise Menchaca and Colleen Doan — who endorsed him three years ago are urging voters not to elevate Svonkin on May 17.

Menchaca, the school board president in the small district of tree-lined streets, keeps an empty chair between Svonkin and herself on board nights due to his violent fist-pounding. Board member Doan describes Svonkin's bullying as "this jumping up and pounding and raising of his voice. It's just ongoing in closed session." Former board member Freeman calls Svonkin "the Grandstander Supreme."

Svonkin prefers to be addressed as "the Honorable Scott Svonkin," which locals say they refuse to do. The Pasadena Star-News and San Gabriel Valley Tribune called him out in an editorial: "Is he up for a seat in the House of Lords soon?"

Cheri Fortner's two boys, who attended school board meetings to earn Cub Scout merit badges, witnessed Svonkin's "arrogant behavior ... in speaking to his fellow board members — and to people," she angrily recalls.

Parent Audrey Lee was at a meeting with "a big turnout of parents who don't get involved in politics. The way he presented himself, we were appalled."

At one infamous meeting, parent Scott Bowles watched Svonkin get out a turkey sandwich with lettuce, cheese and a side of dressing. "He had his mouth so full of food that when he decided he wanted to fight with the board president and other board members, there was food falling out of his mouth," Bowles recalls. "You know when you have so much food in your mouth you stick it to one side and your cheek puffs up?"

As Svonkin talked over the board president and constituents, food fell out, Bowles says: "It was disgusting."

Suzanne Paine, ex-president of the San Gabriel Chamber of Commerce, says, "He is talking into the microphone, he is stuffing his face and chewing and eating and — everybody was just looking at everybody."

San Gabriel City Councilman Mario De La Torre felt Svonkin's antics were "embarrassing as an elected official," and told Svonkin as much.

At a Gabrielino High School ceremony where seniors were awarded scholarships from companies, Svonkin lashed out, in front of others, at invited guest Ken Tcheng, whose firm had given money. Tcheng recalls how Svonkin slammed his race for the school board, saying, "You ran a dirty campaign last time, and I'm going to do everything I can to destroy you!" Tcheng says the threat "came out of nowhere."

A mother who won't give her name says a red-faced Svonkin pounded on her minivan window as she waited to pick up kids from a mock trial at Gabrielino High School.

She was calling the kids from her cellphone to explain that she couldn't find parking. The woman, who knows Svonkin, says her first instinct when he yelled at her was, "There's a fire, someone needs help, oh my God!" Instead, she recalls him shouting, "We are trying to get people jobs here!" referring to a job fair inside.

Svonkin chuckles at claims that he's a bully: "I'm a 45-year-old, slightly overweight guy. ... Nobody would think I was a bully. People call names when they don't like what you stand for." But the Star-News editorial suggested otherwise: "For months now, San Gabriel residents have been complaining of what they see as [Svonkin's] incivility, the bullying tactics, the union shilling and the desire to get politically ahead rather than serve the parents and kids."

How did this polarizing figure become the choice of Brad Sherman, Howard Berman and Lucille Roybal-Allard? "He's got the endorsement of all the state Democrats," Freeman, a Democrat, says. "I wonder: Do they even know? When they endorse a local person for school board, do they even know anything about the guy? I don't think so."

I wasn't going to bother voting today and this comment is probably too late for many to read. I caught a brief mention of Gutierrez's homophobia and Tea Party connections. After a bit of reading it turns out she is proudly homophobic and an evangelical born again Christian who would push her religious beliefs on the board. So I turned my attention to her opponent Svonkin. Sounds like the guy can be an ill mannered lout. Also sounds like all the complaints about him are just from this most recent work in San Gabriel. If he is such a bad guy, where are the complaints from Prang or Koretz? Or people who worked in their offices with him?

Missing a week of jr. college to work the US Open when he was a kid? Seriously? I guess the writer of that comment never had any fun when they were a kid.

So...Bullish guy who gets results vs. uber-religious homophobic 2nd grade teacher. I am making a point of voting. For Svonkin.

After some research of both candidates, I've decided to vote for Lydia Gutierrez. Svonkin is an insider, part of the status quo (regardless of party affiliation)...and thing won't change for the better if one votes for an establishment candidate like Svonkin. And btw, just like Svonkin I too live in the city of San Gabriel...and I can vouch the ill repute character of Svonkin.

Yet again, we have someone voting for Gutierrez who can't say ONE positive thing about her. Actually, the only information you give is her name. If you did "research", can you please fill us in on this candidate?

CC, if you read closely between the lines, an implied positive in my post is that Lydia Gutierrez is an outsider, not part of the ruling establishment/status quo..Svonkin on the other hand, is. It is these same people now ruling, linked with special interests allied with Svonkin that got us mired into trouble in the first place...

Sal, not only you sound like a bully yourself in your post below...but a religious bigot as well.

WHO CARES what religion Ms Gutierrez has..it has no bearing whatsoever with performing duties in the LACC school board position.

Scott Svonkin speaks up and once talked with food in his mouth! Oh my God! We better vote for the anti-gay Tea Party-endorsed candidate instead! Nice smear campaign, laweekly. Can you give ONE reason to vote for his opponent? Just ONE reason. You don't know ANYTHING about his opponent. This is TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE.

Sal Ignab

A better question is how an openly bigoted endorser of Proposition 8 got this close to being in power. Scott's competitor Lydia not only endorsed "Yes on 8" but also handed out yard signs in 2008 that said "vote for Lydia and vote Yes on Prop 8." Scott may be a bully to some people, but Lydia bully our gay kids to death; she wants curriculum and tenure decisions based on biblical teachings, and wants your vote while her Web site is filled with misspellings and inaccuracies.

People who hate others are unfit for public office, let's make sure that Ms. Gutierrez is not put in a position where she can bully and oppress our children.

ANYBODY BUT SCOTT SVONKIN FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOARD

Mirna

Scott has failed his fiduciary duty as a credit union director in protecting the customer's interests. Under Scott's leadership the California Credit Union has sustained losses of over $30 Million. This is just the type of leadership we don't need at the Community College. Scott's fiduciary responsibility to the credit union customer has been wasted. Don't let him get near the Community College treasury - taxpayer money is at risk.

I got a lot from reading this article. Svonkin is part of the LACCD construction crisis,he is in the pocket of big unions, he squishes competition, and leaves no time or money for attention the needs of classrooms. He's a bully.

We're in a new age of anti-bullying. Behavior is important and proper behavior and respect for our procedures are more important than ever. I couldn't vote this guy to be a crossing guard. Why give him a seat on a board?

Tony

Scott SVONKIN is the Vice-Chairman of the California Credit Union. The Credit Union lost over $30 Million in 2009. The credit union lost over $4.5 Million in 2010. This is not the type of leadership we need at the Community College. Director Scott should resign the Credit Union.

I attended a San Gabriel school board meeting to get a school district transfer permit. It became obvious that Svonkin did not consider the merit of any of the applications. People in a worse condition than us - e.g. a single mom with a long commute, were getting denied by him one after the other. I was a little appalled. Information in this article correlates with the behavior that I observed. I'm sure that the guy really doesn't really care about education.

I don't know Svonkin -- I was just doing some research prior to voting -- and am completely disgusted by this author. Almost no information about Svonkin's views are or what he stands for, just a lot about personality quirks. A childish anecdotal rant. We're facing a lot of problems and I don't care if someone pounds on a table. He just might have good reason for all I know. Why is this lame writer being given space by anybody? What has the LA Weekly sunk to?

Captain B

Cicero's advice to the lawyers of Ancient Rome was to slander your opponent if you don't have a case to plead. Lawyers and politicians today still follow that advice. So this article which attack's Mr Svonkin personally - without addressing any substantive issues - should not help his opponent. On the other hand, personal character and integrity are important for any elected official. I've never seen him, but if Mr Svonkin really is an obnoxious bully (as reported) that may very well be a substantive issue in itself.

Ross from San Gabriel
Ross from San Gabriel

Umm, the fact that Svonkin called in "sick" to a recent San Gabriel School Board meeting but then put on his suit and went to smooze with Democratic union leaders during the time he was elected to serve the public -- well that is not a personality quirk as some of the Svonkin apologists claim -- it demonstrates a fundamental lack of integrity.

How can we expect Svonkin to enforce truancy laws when he himself skipped out on his sworn duty to serve the public at the San Gabriel School Board meeting?

Consider yourself fortunate that you do not know Svonkin and don't judge the community that DOES know him. The author did not write about "personality quirks". The author wrote about destructive and bullying behaviour. Keep out of business you know nothing about.

This article is for voters for the May election. I believe that Robert is probably a voter in that election as I am. While Svonkin's alleged anger problems may be an issue for those (like you) who know him and they may effect his ability to work with others, eating with your mouthful does not preclude someone from elected office in my opinion. The latter is not an important piece of information. Also, I don't believe anyone was judging the community for disliking him. This article is just aggressively uninformative as to the issues we need to know for the May election.

Scott Svonkin is perfectly suited to be elected a member of the Board of Trustees of the L.A. Community College District. His distractors are totally ignoring his skills and qualifications. I speak from personal experience in working with Scott.

In the mid 1990's, when Scott was fresh out of college, he worked for me in our Woodland Hills office at Prudential. I was very impressed with his dedication and hard work, and, more importanty, his ability to get things done. When I was later promoted to National Vice President of Sales and Marketing, one of my biggest challenges was in our New York sales office. In spite of being the biggest market in the U.S., its performance was dismal. Sales were minimal and expenses were astronomical. The office was completely mismanaged and fraught with fraud and waste at all levels.

I decided to send a team into NYC to turn things around. Scott was one of the key members of that team. He gladly accepted the assignment, even though it meant relocating immediately to NYC and leaving his comfortable L.A. environment. For the next couple of years, hard-driven Scott and the other members of the team, cleaned up the NYC office, terminated employees who had caused the problems, hired a new team, established new guidelines and safeguards. At the end of their assignment, NYC was our number 2 sales office in the country and its expenses were in line with sales.

Bottom-line, Scott got the job done. No one worked harder or smarter than him. Was he a bully at times? Probably so. He would not have gotten successful results had he not taken radical and, sometimes, controversial steps.

I am now retired and have nothing to gain from endorsing Scott. In fact, we have not been in touch since I left Prudential in 1999.

I believe the article in the L.A. Weekly News completely ignored Scott Svonkin's qualifications. If he is elected, he is 100% results-oriented and will get the job done......exactly what the L.A. Community College District Board of Trustees needs at this time.

L.A. Weekly did NOT completely isnore Scott Svonkin's qualifications and your statement that "he is 1005 results-oriented" is totally off the wall. It is obvious that you have never seen him in action. Come to SG and talk to a few teachers, a few parents and a few administrators and you will see that he is 100% ineffective. Attend a school board meeting and see for yourself. Scott Svonkin's only interest is Scott Svonkin.

It is truly revealing of Scott Svonkin's ethics that he called in "sick" so he would be excused from attending the meeting of the SGUSG School Board to which he was elected to instead campaign for his future political aspirations. He clearly lies easily as a means to an end. San Gabriel made a huge mistake in electing him. He has clearly abandoned his responsibilities to further his own desires. Disgusting!

An interesting quote from the article: "Svonkin is known for regularly collecting his San Gabriel Board stipend money even when he does not attend meetings due to "personal" issues. Other board members waive their stipend when they cannot attend. Wonder if he was planning on collecting his 100 bucks for last night if he weren't caught at UTLA?"

According to Mayor Sam, last night, Scott Svonkin called in sick at his job as Board member of the San Gabriel Unified School District. Was he sick? No. He blew off his elected position as School Board member to seek more filthy public union money for his campaign to run for the Los Angeles Community College School Board. We have to defeat this union flack.

The other union flacks got on the Board in the recent election: idiot Mona Field, union ass-kisser Steve Veres, and union organizer Miguel Santiago. People of San Gabriel have to get the word out to all of the people in their e-mail address books: we need to send Lydia Gutierrez to the LACCD to shake up the public union trolls wasting our money right and left on sweet public union deals.

Let's get the word out about this liar who is trying to climb to higher office with the endorsement of clueless Democratic officials.

Antonia makes the political and social bias of the people attacking Mr. Svonkin quite clear. I hope the voters have access to objective information to make their decision rather than the obviously and intentionally biased Melnikoff article. The allegations are important. Let us hear both sides of the story and make our own decision. Clearly the Weekly failed here, and badly at that. It's embarrassing for a paper with such an important and rich history to allow this to be printed.

Given the large number of comments from San Gabriel -- from people who have witnessed the arrogance of Svonkin first-hand -- this article can hardly be called a "hit piece." The facts are the facts and the willingness of so many elected officials in San Gabriel to go on the record to urge a vote for Svonkin's Republican opponent speaks volumes about the poor vetting process in the local Democratic Party. The role of the public unions in the fall of our state and local communities is well-documented and the time to distance ourselves from union -backed candidates cannot be more urgent.

I am one of the 78 percent of San Gabriel voters who voted "other than Scott" in the March election. This LA Weekly article confirms what I've seen firsthand of Svonkin's outright contempt for his constituents and his shilling for campaign contributors at the expense of taxpayers, voters and students.

Make no mistake: a vote for Svonkin in May is a vote for cronyism, bullying and continued financial waste in the college district. Please help show Scott the door and tell his slate mates Mona Field and Miguel Santiago that voters won't put up with their special interest favoritism -- vote for Svonkin's opponent next month.

The answer to the question in the headline regarding Scott Svonkin is simple: He is the best person for a job at this most difficult of times for our community colleges. Our community colleges, not only in Los Angeles, but statewide, face serious problems that require serious people with serious solutions. We need the best of the best, and Scott is just the man for the job. This is just a fact. Also, in a previous life I was a journalist; a newspaperman to be exact. Moreover, I worked as a broadcast journalist, both in TV and radio. I was honored and humbled to have worked as a reporter, columnist, city and managing editor and even a publisher for more than two decades. I considered journalism a calling of the highest order. Regrettably, this silliness printed in the LA Weekly - once the finest offering, I think, of alternative news, arts and entertainment not only in Los Angeles but the whole of the Southland - is not even worthy of a "scrawl on a bathroom wall."I must say, though, they did spell his name correctly. You should always give credit where credit is due.

Respectfully,

It's not "silliness" as you wrote Steve. I respect you and appreciate the work you do Mr. Whitmore, but you do not live in San Gabriel and you have not been put down and intimidated by him. You have not seen Svonkin's arrogance and anger that is dished out to the teachers, community members. and anyone who disagrees with him.You have not been the target of his rages and outbursts He does not need to be placed on yet another school board to create more chaos. He needs to avail himself of anger management and learn tact and civility. Bottom line is that Scott Svonkin is not a nice person. He is an egomaniac with serious control issues. God help the Community Colleges if he is elected.

You work with Scott and are good friends with him. In fact you called the Pasadena Star News and reported that the reason San Gabriel citizens were recalling him was because they were racist which is absolutely not true. You had no facts and had never spoken with any of the diverse San Gabriel citizens who were proponents of the recall before you started throughing out false statements about racism. Now that is responsible and unbaised reporting - no fact checking on your part.

Since Lydia has been attacked in the comments below I wanted to provide a bit of information about her. This information was provided from the League of Women Voters website:

Mission Statement:

Elevate the Los Angeles Community College District to become the frontrunner in setting academic and vocational standards of excellence for community colleges nationwide.

I am fighting to put Los Angeles Community Colleges FIRST in today's global economy through:

Achieving Academic Excellence

Education programs should be engaging, relevant and challenging. A rigorous and relevant academic program prepares students for today's global market. By integrating technology into the learning environment, we can enhance the education skills through cooperative and collaborative engagement in class.

Building Fiscal Responsibility

The budget crisis has encumbered the State of California and the Department of Education, especially for our Community Colleges. I have lobbied school boards, superintendents, and Chief Business Officers, demanding greater accountability and fiscal management of allocated state, county, and district funds.

If chosen by the people of Los Angeles, one of the first things I will do is ensure transparency of how tax dollars are being spent in the everyday function of the colleges and building construction bond money, how is it being spent. We must have transparency AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Cultivating Success after Graduation

Our Education goals must align with today's global market. We have not created career paths that are meaningful for job employment. Not every student will go to a 4 year college, but every student should be fully equipped for the 21st century global market. There must be a balance of Vocational Training and Academics in our Community Colleges for a successful future!

So glad to read this article. I was appalled to see Svonkin was running for the LACCD Board. I was his English teacher at Pasadena City College when he was a freshman. He missed the first week of classes because he was busy being a ball boy at the US Open, enjoying the marginal spotlight even in those early days.

Somehow he found out when my birthday was and sent me flowers at school--a brown-noser way back then.

I clearly remember he printed all his in-class essays with a blunt pencil; he did not know how to write in cursive. As for his academics, I honestly do not remember his final grade, but I do know it was average at best. He struck me as a mediocre but striving student using everything but his intelligence to get ahead. What has changed?

I am disappointed that so many prominent Democratic politicians have endorsed Svonkin. I would wager they do not know him at all and are merely taking his word for it that he supports the same positions they do. He may (as do I), but if his college demeanor and achievement are any indication, he does not deserve their endorsement. And God knows the LACCD is already in enough trouble.

What's past is prologue, as the saying goes. And as for Svonkin's track record:

- "Among San Gabriel voters, who know him best, 78 percent chose somebody other than Svonkin [for the LACCD seat]."

- "[T]hree current and former San Gabriel Unified School District board members — Lee Freeman, Denise Menchaca and Colleen Doan — who endorsed him three years ago are urging voters not to elevate Svonkin on May 17."

- Svonkin ran on a slate with Mona Field and Miguel Santiago, two of the community college board incumbents responsible for the jaw-dropping misspending detailed by the LA Times. The campaign was shameless and tried to dupe Republicans into voting for Svonkin and the rest.

Thank you, LA Weekly and Mars Melnicoff, for this timely, important story.

Mikijackson

Mars hit a home run here. Note that the Svonkites attacking her do not refute the truth of anything written in the article, they can't - so they just spew vitriol at her, like their golden boy spitting food on everyone in the vicinity of his tirades. No wonder they like him - birds of a feather and all that.

She has even flushed out Democratic/union machine politicos to defend their shill candidate, or, as he is known in the Northeast communities he tried to ram a Home Depot through "Orange Dot Scott". ( He put big orange dot stickers on the people he brought to meetings to shill for Home Depot ). When they attack the reporter for doing such a good job - you know what a good job she has done.

The Weekly stuck to writing about his shameful shenanigans only in relation to how he deals with issues related to his office and constituents. They did not go into his personal lfe - and it is not for lack of material. Here in the Northeast we had heard of his antics long before this - thanks to his aggressive campaign for Home Depot. Nothing was mentioned about his neighbors who don't even speak to him and why, or any of the many other problems this rage rat behavior has caused outside of his public duties.

A person who is this severly out of control needs proffessional help - not elected office where he is entrusted with the education of young people or billions in tax payer funds. His inability to control himself to the minimum standard of public behavior is troubling. Pounding on car windows by a school - do we want to elevate someone who does that? I find such out of control behavior more than a little scary. The Villaraigosa/Democratic/Union machine can have him. I and 78% of voters in his local area don't want tomrun the risk.

Well do not need a ham-handed bully out to feed his own hunger for political power. It is absolutely appalling that this was the "best" the local Democratic party has to offer the young adults of our community colleges.

Ms. Melicoff's research with grassroots people in the San Gabriel community is evident. And the fact cited in the article that in precincts in San Gabriel 78% of the people voted AGAINST Mr. Svonkin demonstrate that his performance has earned outright rebellion in the community where he claims he was so "dedicated" to the students. The voters in San Gabriel are warning the rest of us to watch out.

More people from San Gabriel should share their stories here. I place much more credibility in citizen posts from San Gabriel that some of the so-called Democratic leaders who have posted here to defend their "backroom selected candidate."

I'll take the Republican in this race, because I know the the Democrat is an ambitious union appeaser -- and that -- has driven this state and local communities into bankruptcy!

Hello, I'm actually a member of the San Gabriel community and I have to say ---This article does seem to be written in bad taste. As well -- I don't know of Mr. Svonkin personally, but have only heard very positive feedback when I've entered into conversations about him. Putting that aside, it seems that most of the responses on here seem to share the opinion that this article may have been a mistake for the LA Weekly to publish. I actually have enjoyed reading this paper in the past and have nothing against it. However, every newspaper has their bad day. I think this is LA Weekly's. Also, I think it's interesting that pretty much the only person who seems to defend this article is this SAN GABRIEL CITIZEN. I may be wrong, but he seems to be the only one who keeps posting again and again. This raises a flag to me that he may be working for the paper itself or be an associate of the author of this article. At any rate, I think the fact that he has written so many times speaks volumes about the credibility of this article. Again, I like the LA Weekly a great deal. Just want that to be clear. It's very rare that an article like this comes around. ***tm91775

I'm shocked that you live in San Gabriel and have only heard positive feedback about him. I've sent this article to at least 100 people and those in San Gabriel who read the article only commented that they agreed with it. Or that they have spoken with others who have had similar experiences or comments about him. I've sent this to everyone just in case they know someone they can forward to. I feel awful about having him on our school board but I don't want to just sit back and watch him now badly affect so many others. We need to let everyone know that he will only hurt more people and the education of others if he is voted into this other office.

San Gabrielite

It is very strange to read that you have heard nothing but positive things about Svonkin when you have had conversations about him. As a San Gabriel resident that seems virtually impossible and certainly strains credulity. Once can disagree on policy and political vision without being thoroughly disagreeable and contemptuous towards others. The fact that he has left meetings in the middle to confer with his backers is indisputable. As is the disdain with which he has treated the voters of San Gabriel. He shopped for a political position, found one and used it to leverage himself into another one--that makes him a politician. But to be clear--you will not find avid Svonkin defenders standing up in SG--only a few tepid, nose holding, lesser of two evil supporters and the overwhelming disgusted majority. 78% for the opposition speaks volumes in a majority Democratic, working-class and minority city.

TM I have posted only once in this comment section and replied to one other post. How does that translate into posting again and again? I also live in 91775 and have never met the author of this piece or anyone else who works for the LA Weekly as far as I know. The only way I heard about this article was because it was emailed to me and my husband by several people. By the way, the proper pronoun to use for me is 'her.' How does the fact that I have commented on this article 'speak volumes about the credibility of this article?' I have lived in San Gabriel for over 40 years and have been involved all these years volunteering in the school and the community. You know absolutely nothing about me, not even my gender, but you feel it necessary to judge not what I have said, but the fact that I cared enough to say it. Perhaps you didnt scroll down to the beginning of the comment section to see the other posts from your fellow residents that are equally unhappy with Scott Svonkin. If you had been more involved in the schools you perhaps would have a more accurate opinion of Mr. Svonkin and be in more of a postion to comment, rather than speak as one who doesnt know him personally or how he has conducted himself on your behalf. Those of us who have children and grandchildren in SGUSD care very much about this issue. Try to speak from a postion of knowledge rather that making personal attacks on those who are witnesses to Svonkin's shameful behaviour.

This article is extremely well written and researched and the only thing inaccurate about it is that it does not go far enough in describing the disgust and betrayal that the community of San Gabriel feels about Scott Svonkin. There is total conflict in the community because while we don't want to inflict his bully politics on the Community College Board we can't wait to get rid of him from our School Board. He will not stay long in what ever elected office he may win by chance, because he will either be recalled, or run for a higher office, thus abandoning the responsibilities he falsely said he was willing to accept. He clearly has ambitions higher than small local offices and he has used San Gabriel as a stepping stone, wrecking havoc and displaying shocking disregard for his duties along the way. His one mission on the school board was to get a Project Labor Agreement in place thus assuring him deep pocket political donations from the labor unions. He sold San Gabriel down the river for his own personal gain. Shameful is the best word to describe Mr. Svonkin. Shameful the way he has stepped on the students in the San Gabriel Unified School District just to line his own pockets in his selfish attempt to rise to higher office. Shameful the way he has treated the citizens who elected him and the school staff he over sees. Shameful in the lack of respect and the lack of sense of responsibility he has displayed. Shameful. As a life long Democrat I am ashamed that he has been supported by my party.

What is the purpose of the this article? Mars Melnicoff and the LA Weekly taught its readers nothing about the race for LA Community College Board, only that Mars displays a lack of understanding of the real issues in this race.

Scott Svonkin is a committed public servant with a solid history of fighting for students and working families. This is why the West Hollywood|Beverly Hills Democratic Club, LA County Democratic Party and a number of Democratic organizations overwhelmingly endorsed him over the other candidates (Republican AND Democrat) in the March election.

Scott was the clear frontrunner in the race, winning with 35% of the vote to Lydia Gutierrez' 14%, placing her only a hair above all the other candidates in the race. As your article...or shall I say rampage...hardly noted, Scott now faces Gutierrez in a runoff election.

While Scott has been fighting for years to protect education funding, social services for seniors and the disabled, equal rights for the LGBT community and good paying jobs for his hard-working constituents, Ms. Gutierrez has done the opposite.

Republican/Tea Bagger Gutierrez has ran failed campaigns for State Senate and Superintendent of Public Instruction with little support from parents and teachers.

It should also be noted, Ms. Gutierrez not only campaigned IN FAVOR of Prop 8 in 2008, but attacked her fellow teachers for oppposing it! She is also quoted as saying that a Harvey Milk holiday would be "offensive to the families of her students." (I wonder if this includes her gay students?)

For Melnicoff to write such a worthless article - implying to readers the LA Weekly (a progressive paper?) would support a right-wing nut like Gutierrez - is just shameful.

I encourage all of you to go out and do some reading and find out for yourself that Scott Svonkin is hands down the best candidate for the LA Community College Board.
