Insane Clown Posse: Exclusive Interview

Down (and out) with the Clown

Is the Gathering of the Juggalos sort of the continuation of that?

VJ: Yeah.

Who are these Clowns? Violent Jay, left, and Shaggy 2 Dope, aka Joe Bruce and Joey Utsler
Who are these Clowns? Violent Jay, left, and Shaggy 2 Dope, aka Joe Bruce and Joey Utsler
Are you down with the clown?: ICP in full regalia
Are you down with the clown?: ICP in full regalia

S2D: Exactly. That's not a bad idea. [Looks at Jay] We should do a sideshow.

VJ: We don't actually bring in any deformed people or anything, but the idea of barkers, the showmanship of it all — it's all that the Gathering is. The old-school carnival. Now if you go to a carnival or circus, the ringmaster is the host from the radio station or something. C'mon, man, get the guy, the authentic Ringmaster who travels the world!

S2D: Bring in that creepy guy who probably just touched a kid before in that city, you know? [Laughs] Who knows what the fuck he's up to in nighttime, you know. The cool thing about the Gathering is that it's not just like another festival. It's 24 hours a day. It just doesn't stop. From 6 in the morning to 6 in the morning.

How long does it last?

VJ: Five days. It officially lasts four days, but we open it a day earlier. It's been on the same spot for the last five years.

S2D: We used to find a spot, then we'd be comfortable there and then something would happen.

VJ: We got kicked out of our last spot.

S2D: When we first started, we'd do it in convention centers. Indoors. The first one was here in Novi [Mich.], the second one was in Toledo, the third one in Peoria. But once you get a bad reputation in a certain circle, you kind of get blackballed in that circle. So the convention hall circuit kind of blackballed us. Word got around that kids would be putting stickers and spray-painting, and of course you can't have something of that magnitude in a controlled environment, you know.

Have you ever miscalculated with a booking at the Gathering?

VJ: Tila Tequila.

That wasn't on purpose?

VJ: No-o-o-o. We bring in who we think it's gonna be the shit. When it comes to Tila Tequila, we thought, "That bitch is hot," you know? "People are gonna want to see her, she's like an Internet sensation for being hot." And then we listened to her song [they both laugh] — she had a song out called "I Wanna Fuck the DJ." We were, like, "That's perfect for what we're doing."

S2D: We had no idea that was going to whip into that kind of storm. Everybody thought it was premeditated, but we had no idea.

Some people don't understand that it's knuckleheads in the crowd that are gonna throw some shit. They don't understand it's not us.

VJ: We don't pay somebody all that money to come in and get booed. No fucking way. We're not that brilliant anyway.

S2D: Right. VJ: We had Ice Cube a couple of years ago. And he would only meet one of us. We asked his people if we could meet him and they said, "No." We said, "We'd like to talk to him before he goes onstage, because he should know a couple of things." 'Cause they just pulled their bus into the Gathering and right up to back of the stage. He wasn't hangin' out or anything.

S2D: He was all business.

VJ: So we felt we had to tell him, you know, "These are Juggalos, they wanna be addressed as such," we told him about the "whoop, whoop" [a Juggalo chant], some people don't know what it is, they think it's booing or something else. We wanted to give him the heads-up on everything, so they told us they'd let one of us in. So I went — I think I might be a little bit of a bigger fan.

Was Ice Cube familiar with ICP?

VJ: He didn't give me any indication that he knew anything about us. I told him the deal, I told him it was an honor to have him there, I told him he's one of my all-time favorite rappers and I've followed his entire career word for word. ...

S2D: He's a businessman.

Did he follow your advice onstage? Did he address the Juggalos as such?

VJ: Absolutely! Everything we said! It was obscene. And he gave us a shout-out! He said, "I wanna thank the Insane Clown Posse," right from the stage. Which made our fucking day.

The opposite of the chaotic Gathering would be the Internet pay-per-view project you're working on, right?

VJ: Uh-huh. That's our new thing. That's what we're diving into headfirst. We have a wrestling show every two weeks here in Detroit. We're rehearsing right now. We're getting our lighting down, we're getting our camera tactics down, because two weeks from tomorrow we're going to Internet pay-per-view and we wanna be tight, if we're gonna charge. We're just gonna jump into Internet pay-per-view. People would get to see all the cool things we do. Last year we did something called Oddball Bonanza. And it would start with a comedian and then we'd say, "Take it away!" and everyone in the crowd — we had it in Philadelphia, 2,000 people — and then everyone in the crowd just turns around and we have a ring over here and in the ring we have a guy laying on a bed of nails and a guy does a sledgehammer or breaks a brick on his stomach or whatever. Or a guy flipping a cigarette out of a chick's mouth with a whip, and then you go back to the stage and then we'd have one of our acts perform.

Love them, or hate them no one can take away what they have done.they have made millions by doing what they dreamed not alot of people can say that. I cant believe that some people can be so ignorant to hate on something they really know nothing about. I mean you would think that all of these self proclaimed smart people would make a better argument. Not just say their lyrics suck just because. And parents get over the fact your kids are messed up because its in the to have a mental problem, or because its something u did . Its not ICP'S problem or juggalos or music. Its you not teaching your children betweent fantasy and the real world.I'm 22 years old I have been a juggalo sense I was 8. I had my problems during my teen years.... what teen dosent. But the one thing that got me through was ICP. I graduated both high school and college. I have a job...dont make alot but its not flipping burgers thats for sure im still in college. I lead a productive life! And guess what I will be a juggalo till i die. ICP has taught me that I can do anything and by hard work u will have success.

Uh, hey "MamaBaker", re-read this:The U.K. paper The Guardian claimed you guys were "evangelical Christians" after the "Miracles" video went viral.

VJ: That shit is crazy. [Laughs]

S2D: Yeah, no. [Laughs]

VJ: I don't deny believing in God, you know what I'm sayin', but we don't have a master plan or nothing.

They don't claim to be christian, dumbass. They JUST FUCKING SAID THAT.

Have a nice day :D

What I don't understand about them is they claim to be "christians" when they use such vile language and gruesome details in their form of music. I see them as a cult or some type of misleading information to our teens. Teens are confused enough without this misinformation already.

religion in general is a cult, look at the actual facts, if u dont believe like a certain group of people ur gonna suffer for all eternity, if u do something bad, ur gonna suffer for all eternity, but if u live and die the way someone tells u to as they see its supposed to be based on a book written by another flawed human being hundreds of years ago in a different religion and then added on to later on, then ur going to be in eternal happiness...wuts the difference in that and someone sayin hey lets go poison a bowl of punch and drink it to be one with eachother and the universe....in the long run there is no difference, we all end up dead, we all lived for pointless-ness, and the whole time we lived we believed we cud be happy just to suffer in different forms of torture the whole time, we try to cope just to cry more, for example (off the top of my head) say ur mother died when u were so young that u dont remember, but then ur grandmother and grandfather took u in and raised u, then after living to see u grow up and start ur life on ur own, one of them dies....u try to cope saying stuff like "its ok they're in a better place" but its not really ok cuz u still miss the fuck out of them, u still wish u cud see them smile at u one more time, hug u, kiss u , tell u they love u....ur torturing urself by tryin to conceal how u truely feel...and the reason u do this is because religion has taught u that this is what happens when in all actuality u have no possible idea if its true or not...y u ask because nobody can prove that they have spoken to God, or seen him all they have is blind faith, which im not dis-crediting, sometimes its what u need to get through but other times like saying "u said a curse word, so ur going to hell" is complete bullshit, sorry if i offended u but if u actually read all of this and think about it, it really makes alot of sense, and also if ur gonna bash on me back or anything know this, none of this was thought of b4 hand i kinda just kept rambleing on in my head so as i thought of it i typed it, i hope u have a good one :)

FRESH!!!! Its awesome to see an artical written in such length without all ICPs comments being choped to pieces. Knowing ICPs doing so many diffrent projects to constantly provide us with new fresh entertainment is the bomb, look at most popular bands & musicians your lucky to get a new album once a year & a stadium tour to follow tha you dont feel like your a part of. The biggest thing that will always keep ICP true to us the Juggalos & Lettes is the Gathering, specificaly the fact that any time at the event any member of the Family could just walk up on you while your just hanging out. Its as if they are all there to see and expeirence the same show that they are all putting on. Thats why ICP, Twiztid, ABK, Blaze & Boondox or any other regular Psychopathic artist will always be loved by us the fans, they are fans of us and the shit we do,its what entertains them and thats FRESH!!! MUCH FAMILY & CLOWN LOVE FROM CHICAGO!! WHOOPWHOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Should kids listen to ICP? No. It is mature content like R-rated movies and such. But how can they 'promote violence' when they 'die' in half of their songs? Also they sing VERY ficticiously. Like being the boogey Man or a Mad Professor.

Nicole
Nicole

You aren't truly listening to the music, then. You can't just select a few of their songs and say "See? That's not appropriate for kids. It sends a negative message." No. You have to assess their music as a whole, because it's all part of a continuous message. Yeah, a great part of their music IS fictitious. But that's part of the image they're portraying, and it helps get the point across. Many musical artists do this. It's not a trend they started, and it's quite common to speak from another persons point of view in a song.

Irene,

I am a proud parent of a self proclaimed "juggalo” and I can tell you the opposite story. My 17 yr old son is an honor student, scored a 30 on his ACT, he does not drink, do drugs, or is out having sex as you would like people to believe. It is too bad I cannot say the same for the “popular” crowd with whom my son chooses not to spend time with. I was in my teens as ICP first came out and as they were not my cup of tea I had 6 younger cousins who were also led down “the juggalo path”. It’s funny because 2 of them became teachers, 2 became police officers, one is a biochemist, and the other is a robotic engineer. It sounds to me that your child had emotional problems long before she heard her first ICP song as some teenagers do and I am sorry about that. But to blame a music group for her detachment from her REAL family is ridiculous. Have you ever really taken the time to sit down and read what ICP is all about? Have you ever read Joe’s (Violent J) book “Behind the Paint”? Again I would venture not because if you did you might get a little more insight into your child’s heart. They are not really about violence or drugs or even poor morals as that is just the way to get the kids to listen as they have a much deeper meaning to share. I remember sneaking off to listen to 2 Live Crew and Kid Rock’s “Yodeling’ in the Valley” as a child and thinking my gosh these are songs loaded with bad words and sex. I also remember people saying Ozzy and KISS were devil worshipers. What ICP is really about is making teens who feel like they don’t belong, or were picked last in sports, or are overweight, or considered unattractive somewhere to belong. ICP doesn’t judge their fans or encourage cliques or even ask their fans to be mean to other people. Any true juggalo will tell you it’s quite the opposite. I have found in the 2 yrs my son has been a fan that they have taught him he doesn’t have to be a follower or do things that other kids do to be cool. ICP encourages their fans to be themselves and that by doing that it makes them cool. They also preach about hard work and how if you want to make it in this world then work hard and make it happen. They preach that racism is wrong and so is abuse. They tell their fans to believe in things and not to take the little things for granted. These are wonderful qualities that if you as a parent instilled in your child at a young age they help continue to grow. Do their songs have sex and violence in them? Yes but unless you only play Disney music you are going to get that from everywhere. When is the last time you saw Miley Cyrus performing a show for children’s charities? My son bought 3 toys to donate for that concert with his own money. I was very proud. Your child feels disconnected from the world and if you want to reconnect then forget the therapists and talk with your child. Don’t judge her, don’t interrupt her just listen. Before I let my son listen to what appeared on the surface to be just a string of bad words with violence thrown in I took to time to see what they were really about. I talked to my cousins who were fans and read through every interview I could find that they were a part of because as a parent that is my responsibility. Due to the graphic language I told my son he needed to be at least 15 to buy a full CD however I did let him download what I felt were age appropriate songs. I did the responsible thing as a parent. As for them being a cult I could say the same for religion. Because they call themselves a “family” does not equal “Manson Family”. When I went to visit family in Alabama a “juggalo” held the door open for my son and me because he saw my son’s hatchet man charm. They gave each other the “whoop whoop” and moved along. It’s not like juggalos are sitting on the street corner trying to recruit. For some of these kids this “family love” is all they have so I say keep on keeping on ICP.

You figure that if ICP had anything close to common sense that they would encourage their fans to stop acting like a bunch of sociopathic douchebags. Lets be real here. Music is a powerful tool. As musicians, they have a certain responsibility to their fans as well as the world. They are obviously not a political or social band, but one that makes mindless drivel for the people that Irene described.

However, if the members of ICP weren't low-life, self-centered, scum of the earth then they would let it be known to their fans that they should conduct themselves with some sense of respect or dignity and should strive to better themselves, especially since they receive such bad press for being the leader of a destructive white trash cult.

But then again, if one assumed this they would also assume that ICP and their so-called "family" actually have 3 brain cells between them.

Joshua Krawczyk
Joshua Krawczyk

Your comment is as simplistic and ignorant as you claim ICP and us Juggalos/Lettes to be. You should have used more than three brain cells when composing it. Thats just my opinion just like yours it could be right or wrong, but attacking anyone in the manner you have here leaves me with the sence of jelousy. This is a great artical & your a perfect example of why us Juggalos & The ICP are more popular than ever, so thankyou. Please continue to tell everyone you know how much you hate us & how bad we suck we love the attention. WHOOPWHOOP!

You are such a silly person. When you say " Lets be real here. Music is a powerful tool. As musicians, they have a certain responsibility to their fans as well as the world." Yes, music is very much so a powerful tool however, the fact you think they should take responsibility for what their fans do is un-American. If you open that door open for them to take responsibility for others, then you will open a floodgate where Celebrities could get charged for being a bad role model. You sound like you would fit right in a communist country :)

Irene Vaksberg, Insane Clown Posse had NOTHING to do with that at all. The same thing could have happened to your daughter if she had been listening to Marilyn Manson. It was the people SHE chose to surround herself with. I just get so annoyed with people putting all the blame on ICP because even they say, "It is just music." You even said yourself that your daughter had some emotional problems to begin with, so really, it is her fault, not ICPs.

Irene Vaksberg
Irene Vaksberg

Dear Editor-

My name is Irene Vaksberg and when I came to work last Friday, I just about had a nervous breakdown when I saw the Insane Clown Posse on the cover of LA Weekly. I was disgusted by the fact that your magazine gave them so much time when they have destroyed my family and many many more. They thrive on the kids that are loners, depressed, have emotional problems. Kids that are unhappy and can’t find their footing in society. A lot of the kids come out of the foster system and do not know where to go or what to do with themselves. These are the kids that become juggalos and juggalettes. My daughter became a juggalette when she was 14 years old. She had some emotional problems, and I know you are saying, “Why is this Insane Clown Posse’s problem, and whey is the mother putting the blame on this group?”. The answer is, because even with 10 years of therapy, private school, and many other things I did, Insane Clown Posse was stronger. She would say that “her family” and the “carnival” will take care of me. I put her in private school to help with her problems and she left school to follow “her family” and live the juggalettes life of drugs and sex. The juggalos have control of the girls and my daughter suffered abuse from her juggalo boyfriend. My daughter ran away from school for 6 weeks and when she came to school she brought a hatchet and was paranoid and on drugs and kept saying “the clowns will keep her safe”. I had to put her in a psychiatric hospital and when she was there she kept saying “the clowns are here, the clowns are here…I will be going to the carnival.” There were 15 kids in the same hospital and 5 were in “the family”. She thought the carnival sent her there to be with them.

That was the worst time in my life and when I read the story in LA Weekly, I heard my daughter and her friend in my head. I was very sad to the see that the ICP got so much exposure. Your magazine glamourized this group. I hope they never sell any cds. I hope that no one else writes about them or puts them on the cover of anything. They have no morals, they preach violence and abuse. My daughter had a child so she could make more “family” for the carnival. She cannot take care of her and now the baby is my responsibility. The “family” is not here to buy food or diapers or anything else she needs. Insane Clown Posse is a cult. I know we have freedom of speech, but I wish theirs was taken away. ICP makes millions of dollars and the groups that follow them live on the streets and homeless shelters. I hope you will take some time and do some research on the destruction that they cause families and then give the voice to us. People need to be aware.

~Irene Vaksberg

It's not ICP's fault that your daughter has issues Irene, private school does more damage to people than any music I know of. Don't generalize a entire group of people just because your daughter is unstable and took everything that two guys in clown makeup rapped about seriously. Take responsibility as a fucking parent. I'm a Juggalo, my girlfriend is a Juggalette, and 75% of my friends are part of our family. We don't walk around with hatchets and drug ourselves out to the point of psychological breakdown. The blame is on you as a parent for not being able to take care of your own child. Own up to your mistake and stop scapegoating innocent people.

Irene, It sounds like you daughter had issues before she found ICP. I used to be a "Juggalo", I had all the CD's, Shirts, Thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, etc... Trust me ICP and everything surrounding it is not a "Cult" as you called it. You say all these people live on the streets and in homeless shelters, did you ever stop to think that maybe they live there and that's why they listen to ICP instead of your reasoning that they live their because they listen to ICP. ICP is a way to communicate with others in similar situations and living conditions, that's why they consider every "Family", since they feel more comfortable around others with similar interests and in similar situations that they can relate to better then their own family. You make it sound like everyone who listens to them is a low life, and a waste of space, did you not go through fads when you were in Jr. high and High School? Some people grow out of it and others fall deeper into harder and emotional times such as your daughter, but in no way is music to blame for anything. You said 15 people were in the hospital, yet only 5 were there because of "The Clowns", so you mean to tell me 2/3rds of the people in the same hospital were going through the exact same thing, but not because of "The Clowns"?You also said that you hope the LA Times would do some research about the destruction ICP causes to families before putting articles like this, but I think you are in need to do research on your own first. How many people have considered themselves "Juggalos" and how man are in Hospitals or mental institutions compared to people who don't listen to ICP? I bet the numbers are much better than your 1:3 ratio at your local Hospital... May lead normal lives. I fell out of the ICP scene for the most part as I graduated Highschool, I went on to be successful and never had any "Mental" problems, just as I know tons of people who are still very much into the scene and also lead normal everyday lives. People can have issues, and can break down, and everyone trys to blame it on something else like music people listen to, or clothes people wear (I was actually told I was going to be a murderer because I wore baggy pants, no really!) or the people they hang out with or the games they play, etc... Most of it can actually be attributed to the parents. Forcing her to go to private schools and therapy causes a young teen to do what? Rebel, Hello! I was force to go to church, so now I hate it, that doesn't make me a bad person. It sounds like you made some poor choices as a mother and instead of forcing her out of something, you should have try to relate with her on it. My parents let me do stupid things, but they would rather have seen me riding in shopping carts into curbs then out doing drugs or worse. Blame yourself a bit before 2 guys she has never even met probably...

I am a devoted and educated fan of ICP and even though your daughter has a mental illness, you are using it to tilt opinion in your favor. You need to take some responsibilty for your daughter's condition instead of blaming something you do not understand, something that brings a lot of people in this world joy and happiness. ICP doesn't create mental conditions (they have helped many many people persevere through hard times), bad parenting and uninvolvement in your child's life create mental conditions. I'm sorry for your situation but you need to grow up, take responsibility, and keep moving forward.

P.S.I know this comments section has already been bombarded by jugg-heads rather than actual Weekly readers in an attempt to tilt the scales in their favor. No biggie. But, say, LAW, how exactly do you cater to an audience that hates to read?

It must have been a slow week. Is the Weekly doing so bad that it has to stoop to this? Courting people who think wrestling is real? This was the first time ever that I was embarrassed to be caught reading your paper. I actually tore the cover off lest anyone think I was reading an actual article about ICP. I'll admit I took a peek just to laugh. And I know it's too late for this rag to take note in its letters section, but the final word should really go to Bob Dylan: "Oh, the flowers of indulgenceand the weeds of yesteryear,Like criminals, they have choked the breathof conscience and good cheer. The sun beat down upon the stepsof time to light the wayTo ease the pain of idlenessand the memory of decay."

Now, HOW IN THE HELL is that in any warped frame of mind like "Miracles"???

To wit: "I fed a fish to a pelican at Frisco bayIt tried to eat my cell phone, he ran away...Pure motherfucking magicRight? This shit'll blow your fucking mind...Fucking magnets, how do they work? And I don't wanna talk to a scientistY'all motherfuckers lying, and getting me pissed...Magic everywhere in this bitchShit's crazy"

No, you turds. Nothing that blows YOUR fucking mind could possibly blow mine or that of anyone else with an education past the 8th grade. LA WEEKLY: fire Gustavo Turner. Promise your readers that you'll never give him another assignment. Maybe he can get coffee for your real writers, but nothing beyond that. Give him a crayon, but don't let him take "playing reporter" too seriously.

If you are so intelligent how come you cannot understand ICP? I have seen some bad arguements against ICP but this is the worst. Look deeper and you might understand. P.S. I have a master's in engineering and they are my favorite band.

This is exactly what people really should be reading about ICP. Most people are highly ignorant about anything regarding ICP. Then again, it is true that many people here in our great country just decide to hate something, just becasue the media does.... Classic intellectually barren America... Music is just music, and all those that live thier life according to someone else's ideas, they are just a poor lamb, lost in a land of wolves...

All the haters on here should be ashamed of them selfs! the only thing you are accomplishing by bashing ICP is reassuring the fact that you have absolutely no sense of imagination or creativity. The Insane Clown Posse is one of the most creative (and successful) bands ever! they are not limited to one topic or subject, unlike many bands that seem to be popular at first and then quickly fade away. ICP has been a very relevant part of the history of music and marketing for many years and i dont believe that is going to change anytime soon...Oh and Sharon Ozborn needs to swallow her pride and pay the $50,000 dollors she owes ICP for losing the bet! damn winch..

Great job, Gustavo. Reminds me of the New Yorker profile of Howard Stern many years ago. That one made me a fan of Howard, and this one might have done the same for me and ICP.
