Golem Comes Alive

The Golem was a mythical creature originally summoned from the dust by Jewish mysticism to become a hulking mud monster that protected the Prague ghetto in the 16th century. Generations later, its mythos and image translated beautifully to expressionist cinema a la The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Svengali. Now, Club Foot Orchestra adds its musical thumbprint to the finer points of director Paul Wegener's 1920 silent horror masterpiece The Golem: How He Came Into the World, the only surviving film of the three Wegener, who also plays the Golem, made about the creature. Club Foot Orchestra — Sheldon Brown, founder Richard Marriott and Alisa Rose (RIP, Richard Kelly) — mixes in elements of Hebraic and classical music and horror soundtrack themes to create an entirely new face for this ever-malleable monster movie warhorse.
