The Axmen Cometh

Extreme-guitar aficionados: An Evening With the Majestic Silver Strings brings together four prodigious players of wildly disparate styles to have a go at — of all things — old country standards (think "Cattle Call," "Dang Me," "Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie"). The leader of the band, Nashville stalwart Buddy Miller, has been seen recently beneath his signature hat and hair alongside Robert Plant in his Band of Joy. He's joined on the just-released MSS album by Greg Leisz, a veteran session man and pedal-steel expert; Bill Frisell, a tasty, jazz-fusion kind of guy; and noisemaker Marc Ribot, who has been a member of John Lurie's notorious Lounge Lizards and a sideman to everyone from Tom Waits to Wilson Pickett. The quartet gathers tonight at the Grammy Museum for an informal chat and Q&A about the making of the album, followed by an intimate performance. (Good to see the museum balancing out the award show's more Gaga inclinations.)
