Carlin’s Darlin’

Many couples communicate by leaving silly little notes of endearment for each other. However, most couples aren't George Carlin and Sally Wade, his partner for the final 10 years of his life. Wade, a comedy writer and performer, has collected a decade of ephemera that function as both humor and memoir in a book titled The George Carlin Letters: The Permanent Courtship of Sally Wade. Carlin fans will love the napkins, hotel stationery, postcards and photographs — with riffage from both him and Wade — for its personal glimpse into the comedian's thought processes, while romantics will get the cockles of their hearts warmed by the sheer amour of it all. Like many lovers, they felt they existed as a duo in a secret parallel reality, maintaining they were from Jupiter, a way of explaining why they were so alienated from the Planet of Squares known as Earth. To sum up his sentiments about their relationship, Carlin wanted the couple to be inscribed with this tattoo: "Good for us — Fuck 'em all." Wade will discuss and sign her book tonight as the laughs and a few tears flow.
