'Soe, We Think You Can Dance
Born into apartheid South Africa, choreographer Vincent S.K. Mantsoe's career and the multi-cultural company he assembled have born witness to the historic changes in that country. Mining the country's ritual dances and rhythmic music, Mantsoe has built an international reputation melding traditional movement with contemporary street dance into a style dubbed "Afro Fusion." His company, Association Noa-Cie Vincent Mantsoe, makes it West Coast debut with San, which considers South Africa's tribal bushmen. While his movement is based on his South African roots, he uses an international brush in his creations as evident in San with its score from Iranian vocalist Shahram Nazeri and 12th century poetry from Rumi punctuating this story of the dispossessed, the silenced and the subjugated.
