Trutanich Eyes District Attorney's Post

The L.A. city attorney surprises DA Cooley with possible candidacy

Carmen Trutanich and Steve Cooley are about as close as two politicians can be. But their relationship has been strained in recent weeks as Cooley nears a decision on whether to retire after three terms as L.A. district attorney.

Trutanich, who became city attorney largely thanks to Cooley’s backing, has told supporters he will run for DA if Cooley steps down.

Cooley has other ideas. According to DA insiders, his preferred candidate is Jackie Lacey, his No. 3 administrator, who could make history as L.A.’s first black, and first female, DA.

When Trutanich’s name came up at a press conference in December, Cooley seemed to rule him out, reminding the press corps of Trutanich’s pledge to serve two terms as city attorney.

Soon after, they both attended the city attorney’s holiday party and seemed to get along fine.

But shortly after the first of the year, Cooley got a call from John Shallman, the consultant who ran an insurgent campaign to oust Gil Garcetti in 2000. Shallman, according to a person with knowledge of the conversation, told Cooley that he would be managing Trutanich’s campaign.

Cooley was livid.

He had lent credibility to Trutanich when he was still a long-shot for city attorney, and helped him retire campaign debt after he had won. He had made Trutanich.

In some ways, it was a double betrayal. Cooley apparently had hoped that Shallman would work for Lacey. Shallman also called her to inform her of his decision. She now is in search of a consultant.

Trutanich has not declared his intentions publicly.

“He’s not running for district attorney at this time,” says Trutanich spokesman John Franklin. “From all he understands, Steve Cooley is still running.”

Although Cooley has given every indication of being ready to retire in 2012, he has not officially ruled out seeking a fourth term. But now, if he wants to keep Trutanich out of the race, he may have to run.

Many supporters have been urging Trutanich to throw his hat in the ring. So far, the only declared candidates are career prosecutors with little name recognition outside the DA’s Office. Trutanich would be the only candidate with previous political experience, and an instant front-runner.

“The candidate that would be best for the county is Nuch,” says attorney Barry Groveman, referring to Trutanich by his ubiquitous nickname. “He is born to be a great DA.”

But others are less than impressed with Trutanich’s brief tenure as city attorney. His confrontational style has made enemies on the City Council, and some have questioned the wisdom of certain moves, such as the fight with AEG over the cost of Michael Jackson’s memorial and his effort to obtain grand jury powers.

“He’s fucking insane,” one former contributor to Trutanich tells the Weekly. “He sounds like a thug.”

Without Cooley’s support, Trutanich’s path to victory would rely heavily on law enforcement groups. The county’s police unions, which have strongly backed Cooley in the past, are waiting to see whether he retires before looking closely at possible replacements.

Timing is important. Alan Jackson, a Republican prosecutor, announced his candidacy last month and has already picked up contributions from people who gave to Trutanich in the city attorney’s race.

At his December press conference, Cooley made it clear that he intended to control events as much as possible. He said he wouldn’t want to turn over the office to someone who would “denigrate it and ruin it.”

But the last few weeks have shown that he doesn’t have as much control over the succession battle as he had hoped.

As for Cooley’s friendship with Trutanich, although Trutanich has told supporters that he definitely will run for DA if Cooley bows out, he has not yet told Cooley that.

“Trutanich is very independent,” Groveman says. “He’s his own master.”

All you people who have nothing else better to do than criticize Carmen Trutanich make me sick. We need someone like Nuch to get control of the city and put corrupt politicians and billionaire behind bars, and I don't care if he has to bend a few rules to do it. I like the idea of him having some tame judges to finally start enforcing laws against illegals, gangmembers and drug dealers. With Nuch as DA he'll have the power he needs to clean up the city and get rid of the filth that drags us down, and he'll have the support of citizens who a fed up with liberals who want to turn LA into Tijuana.

LA Observer - you want some Trutanich's skeletons" How about his secret plan to have city attorneys be prosecutor, judge and jury in so-called Administrative Penalty hearings where homeowners would be fined up to $2,000 for not have a permit for a new water heater, or having a yard fence that was too high? Oh, and the beauty of Trutanich's plan was that there would be no right to a public defender, so most folks would have to either spend more money hiring a private attorney, or just pay Trutanich - yeah the money was supposed to go to the City, but only after Trutanich got his skim off the take for "costs." The Clown didn't think there was anything wrong with his plan - that's what you get with a nighttime law school education. Trutanich is a bully and a thug, and not a very clever one either.

Trutanich will know where all the skeltons are buried? You mean all of his skeletons I assume - like his so-called "Bureau of Investigation' that was working on 'criminal aspects' to the Michael Jackson memorial. Seems odd that with a vast 'Bureau' working flat out, Trutanich had goose eggs, zero, zip, nada. James McCuen talks about Cooley's handling of the Bell City caper, and is critical of the year it took to put a case together. Carmen the Clown blabbed about the Michael Jackson memorial less than 2 weeks afterwards, and being the loudmouthed egocentric idiot that he is, succeeded in making sure any evidence that might have existed was long gone before his so-called Bureau could find it. The headlines was all he wanted, that and some tickets to a Lady GaGa concert, provided by AEG. At least Cooley knows how to get the job done, and it isn't in the press with empty threats and falsehoods. We're done with Trutanich.

Trutanich will know where all the skeletons are buried in the City of LA, however he may be precluded from doing anything about it.

In general it is tough to separate politics and connections from professionally performing prosecutions. Yes, the little City of Bell had the whole City Council, Mayor, and City Attorney accused of crimes and Cooley finally put them in his target after 1 year of informants giving the information.

But what about big Cities, such as Los Angeles, the biggest City in the State. Cooley hasn't done anything about it. Is that because its to big and connected and the big boys such as Philip Anschutz and Eli Broad and he is scared of their retaliation?

Or will Trutanich be stuck with the fact that he is bound not to use past knowledge against his then clients, elected officials and Department heads?

I would like to see the tough guy image of Trutanich come to life and even if he needs to refer it to the California AG, he needs to crack down on crimes committed by big all size Cities in LA County.

But Jackie Lacey lied under oath. Is the media going to let that slide and allow for Cooley to choose his cover. Jackie will be his puppet to cover up the corruption. She lied once by saying that she testified against Cooley only because she didn't really know what she was saying because her blood sugar was low. What happens if she is DA and her blood sugar gets low. I am not sure she can make decisions based on criminals behalf if she can't think clearly!!Jackie Lacey puts her hand on the bible and lies flat out. That is disgraceful!

Everyone expected Cooley to endorse Trutanich as his successor, so it seems something's gone wrong in paradise. Cooley's endorsement is huge to whoever wants to be the next DA, and Trutanich would have been a shoe in with Cooley's support. But now there's a game changer and its making for a much more interesting campaign. What everyone wants to know is what happened to change Cooley's position on Trutanich? I bet we'll find out when Cooley officially announces his support for Jackie Lacey; then we'll find out why the "People's Lawyer" is unfit for the job.

Per this article, Cooley said he wouldn’t want to turn over the office to someone who would “denigrate it and ruin it.” Since when does Steve Cooley or any elected D.A. get to "turn over the office" to someone he personally wants? Last time I checked, the DA is elected by the voters of LA County, versus chosen by a guy who acts like he was crowned "King Cooley."

"So far, the only declared candidates are career prosecutors with little name recognition outside the DA’s Office." That line says it all.

Trutanich has turned out to be worse than Weiss, at least with Weiss you knew you were being screwed. Trutanich is worse - he lies while looking right at you, does the bear hug and pats you on the back - just like Michael Corleone in the Godfather, when he pats you on the back, he's looking for the soft spot to plunge the knife. Then he does the teary-eyed "I'm just trying to do the right thing" routine, which is true - he does the right thing for himself and those who are his special interest friends. He wants to be DA so he can use the Grand Jury to threaten, terrorize and intimidate businessmen out of town, leaving the playing field wide open for the businesses in San Pedro who support him. Take a look at which billboard companies where slammed by Trutanich, and which ones were not. Then you might see a trend. Like I said, he's worse than Weiss, way way way worse.

A lot of voters held their noses and voted for Trutanich (even though he's a republican) only because they could not stand the thought of Jack Weiss becoming City Attorney. Trutanich di not win anything, Weiss lost because he turned his back on his constituents in favor of special interests. Trutanich is no different, and when there's a choice between real candidates like Lacey or Jackson, Trutanich will be forgotten.

Nuch is already fund raising for DA and is in the process of reaching out to his supporters now. His fund raiser said that Nuch is in regardless of whether Cooley runs or not. What a backstabbing pyshopath who lacks management skills to be a good DA let alone an adequate City Attorney.

Steve Cooley is a chronic alcoholic who has backstabbed his way to the position of District Attorney. This County will be much better off when Cooley leaves office and hopefully checks into a rehab center to deal with his alcoholism. Let us just hope that he is not replaced with Jacquelyn Lacey, who is a key element of Cooley's corrupt Administration and a thoroughly dishonest rogue in her own right.

No More Nuch
No More Nuch

Message to Steve Cooley - you need to publicly distance yourself from Trutanich, he's poisonous snake in the grass who can look you in the eye and lie through his teeth without batting an eye. More and more people are beginning to realize that. After he made a fool of himself saying there were criminal aspects to the Michael Jackson memorial, and then not even filing a case, I guess we all knew he was not being honest. What happened to that investigation? One year later it all goes quietly away. Then he tries to get Grand Jury powers so that he can back up his threats with subpoenas in a Star Chamber he controls? I don't think so. Trutanich cannot be trusted with power - he's a modern day McCarthy. Whoever said "He's insane" was only partly right, he's also drunk with power and a "my way or the highway" mentality that has no place in law enforcement.

It's a shame that Trutanich is turning out to be everything he promised not to be. He's using the City Attorney's Office as a stepping stone for higher office, and frankly that says all that needs to be said about how much he can be trusted - not at all. The so-called 'People's Lawyer" is all about himself, and what he can do for himself. You can expect a wave of opposition to Trutanich running for DA, in fact now that his true colors are known, his chances of being re-elected to anything have evaporated.

Thank you LA Weekly for confirming what the rumor mill has been churning out for a while now. Trutanich isn't just "f**king insane," he's on an ego trip. He's enjoyed popularity because of his relationship with Cooley, he's going to find LA a very unfriendly place without Cooley's support. The TRUisFalse Blog (www.truisfalse.blogspot.com) looks like its written by someone 'on the inside' in Trutanich's office and is loaded with comments from those who supported Trutanich originally, and now have buyers remorse. Those who comment about Noooch see him as an embarrassment and the cause of problems, not the solution. Trutanich made a fool of himself and the office with his 'criminal aspects' investigation into the Michael Jackson memorial, and he has no credibility with anyone as a result. There's even talk of a recall campaign because of his violation of his sworn promise to voters. LA has enough political pantloads, we thought Nooooch was different, but we were wrong. We won't make that mistake again.

Trutanich is a clown. Does he not value his word when he signs a pledge?
