The simple truth is that people just don't care much about trees.
Three amazing trees in front of an apartment across from work were just whacked to the ground without warning. These were ancient trees, one of them a huge cactus tree that extended into the air about 25 feet tall with numerous spires. It was an awesome sight to see. They cut most of it away and left maybe a quarter of it standing. Just some apartment complex. Who cares, right? Well, I happened to pass that cactus every day and ever single day it made me a little happier. I guess that makes me a tree-hugging fruitcake, huh?
It just seems like appreciation of/respect for/inclination toward a careful stewardship of our only planet is just a happy huggy indulgence, huh? Meanwhile defense companies advertise that one day we will be living on other planets and building space stations. Let's go to Mars! Nothing against space research, but if we cannot even treat our own planet right and take advantage of what it has to teach us, we have no business in space. Look at all the trash there already. When I look around at humanity lately I don't recognize anything I want to be part of. A bunch of people sitting staring into mind machines and talking to each other through them instead of face to face. Doesn't it bother anyone else? I guess it just bothers me. So I'll go back to my corner now, but I had to say it. Maybe I'm just having a bad day.
