Thursday
Memphis-based filmmaker-actor Kentucker Audley (Team Picture) brings two new micro-budgeted, art-meets-life regional postcard features — Open Five, which I consider one of the best undistributed films of 2010, and Holy Land, which I haven’t seen — to Melnitz Movies at UCLA. This may be the only chance you’ll have to see Audley’s movies projected on a screen in this city this year. Google “Melnitz Movies” for ticketing information.

Friday
Animal Kingdom, last summer’s blistering Australian criminal family drama from first-time filmmaker David Michod, is back in L.A., playing every night at 7:30 at Beverly Hills’ Music Hall. Jacki Weaver’s unforgettable turn as a doting grandma/crime boss has a good chance of being nominated for an Oscar.

Saturday
If you missed Dogtooth’s one-week run at Cinefamily last week, it’s playing a single show at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Monica in Santa Monica.

Later, LACMA’s "Golden Age of Road Movies" series continues with a cracking double feature of the wonderfully weird Electra Glide in Blue, starring Robert Blake as a bike cop trying to class-pass as a detective; and Jerry Schatzberg’s Scarecrow, starring a young Al Pacino and an, um, younger Gene Hackman as drifters trying to hitchhike their way to middle-class semirespectability. Scarecrow cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond will speak about his work.

Sunday
A math nerd poses as his hottie crush’s boyfriend and the next thing you know, an alternate online universe is conquered by a bad-vibe AI! The Japanimation Summer Wars is holding on to two shows a day at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in West Hollywood.

Monday
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright’s takeover of the New Beverly continues with a screening of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, which Wright will discuss with Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko), who confesses his passion for the movie in the new book The Film That Changed My Life. Get tickets online now — the Sunday screening of this has already sold out, and this one will, too.
