AWAY IN A DOROTHY CHANDLER PAVILION

Any snow around will be artificial, but the season's greetings will be genuine as the doors of the Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion open wide for the 51st annual L.A. County Holiday Celebration. This year the popular, free tradition has been pared down to three hours of dance, music and song from 24 troupes ranging from polished amateurs to acclaimed professionals like the Gay Men's Chorus. As always, the lineup is a measure of the incredible diversity in this sprawling metropolis, and the dance roster is no exception with Antics Performance's hip-hop take on Leroy Anderson's classic tune "Sleigh Ride," NDM Bollywood's fusion of India's classic dance and movie dance, Jung Im Lee Korean Dance Academy's traditional One Drum Dance, Pacifico Dance Company's folkloric dance from Mexico's Jalisco region, and Halau O Lilinoe's hula offerings to live music. Admission is free but involves obtaining wristbands distributed at 11:30 a.m. in an effort to avoid prior years' lines to enter. Parking also is free. Can't get downtown? Catch the live broadcast on KCET-TV and KPFK-FM radio or the live stream onkcet.org, which we hope is a sign that our public television station's announced commitment to more local coverage in 2011 will extend to L.A.'s vibrant performing arts, of which this show is only a small sampling.
Fri., Dec. 24, 3 p.m., 2010
