DREAM-A PRIMA?

In the tradition-bearing musical scions department, it's often a case of hit and miss -- just compare Frank Jr. to Hank Jr. and the vast artistic chasm between resolute mimicry and genuine expression shudders wide open. Yet some performers leave behind a bag of tricks so profoundly irresistible that it downright demands not just a reintroduction but straight-up veneration. When you consider the swinging achievements of Louis Prima Jr.'s daddio, well, one can't go wrong by sticking to the original recipe. When the wise-blooded horn man takes the stand, he has at his disposal one of American music's most kicking combinations, the mixture of old-school New Orleans jazz communication, well-oiled Italian-American goombah shtick and a trove of critical original Prima compositions that bridged the orchestral-scale big-band era to the heyday of the mad little Las Vegas lounge combo. Junior brings an earnest energy along with that loaded DNA and, with the icy-hot pipes of warbler Sarah Spiegel handling Keely Smith's portion of the lunacy, this affair is, for those enamored of the Prima style (and who isn't?), sure to be a stone, guaranteed, gleeby-gasser.
