Subversion Meets Shawshank

"Paul Provenza," comic Rick Overton recently Facebooked, "has done more for positively changing the comedy world in the 21st century than virtually anyone." Hard to argue with his sentiments, given Provenza's documentary The Aristocrats, long-gestating Showtime series The Green Room, annual scouting for Montreal's Just For Laughs festival and May's First Amendment-trumpeting ¡Satiristas! book collaboration with photographer Dan Dion. Adding a much-anticipated live, local project to his already piled-high plate, Provenza again pairs with Dion and theater vet Bob Dubac to present a recurring stage version of ¡Satiristas!. Held every first Tuesday, the show is part of the Actors' Gang's "Axis Mundi Series," a month's worth of Tim Robbins-curated comedy, film and poetry programming sharing a specific theme. Each 90-minute production, Dion elaborates, features outspoken comics veering from traditional stand-up into more theatrical territory, a deliberate flowing of acts via closing and opening bits, live art and music, and after-mingling. In addition to Provenza and Dubac, the debut lineup includes Johnny Dam, Tracy Newman, Matt Besser, Dylan Brody, Franklin Ajaye, Jimmy Dore, Ron Shock, Tere Joyce, Gary Stockdale, Gary Shapiro, Max Neutra and Rick Shapiro. And November 2's timely kickoff theme? Prop 19, of course.
