GO JUMP IN A MONOLAKE

Electronic music pioneer Robert Henke isn't just a composer. He's a "sound shaper." And he doesn't give concerts; he gives "aural events." Like his most famous one, Monolake Live, a continuously evolving sound-space experiment that has been held at various places around the world and comes this weekend to REDCAT. Henke, co-creator of the revolutionary Ableton Live music software and a legendary innovator in the field of computer generated music, describes his work as "an experience the audience cannot get at home or when listening to a DJ set ... I place the listener in a deep, wide field of sound that is much bigger than the physical room defined by the speakers and the walls." You can say that again. Using all sorts of ultra-sophisticated technologies, Henke shapes and manipulates tones and timbres into a blend of techno, ambient sound, drone, dub-step and something else that has no definition other than "the now." This master of the musical moment turns the entire environment into one big instrument that plays the sounds of the universe, so that, as he emphasizes, "no performance is like another." The result is a combination of order and chaos that both hypnotizes and catapults the listener into a new dimension of aural epiphany. Oh yeah -- as a combination of concert and club show, it's meant to be danced to.
