Book fairs abound in this city, so what sets the West Hollywood Book Fair apart from any other? As in all things WeHo, the city goes the extra mile to accomplish something meaningful (as if promoting books isn't enough). This ninth annual event does just that. Yes, there will be the usual exhibitors, more than 150 of them, manning booths on topics such as journaling, fiction and non, sci-fi, freelancing, screenwriting, publishing and poetry. But the greater purpose is to promote reading, writing and literacy in the community. So if you know a kid who regards reading only as homework, this is the perfect place to turn him on to books through storytelling, mini-playwriting workshops, comics and graphic-novel seminars, youth improv and theater performances, teen poets, young adult author readings, fairy-tale re-creations and blogger interviews. Beats an afternoon of playing Halo: Reach any day.
Sun., Sept. 26, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., 2010
