After decades elevating dance created by famous and not-so-famous choreographers, it takes a lot to impress legendary lighting designer Jennifer Tipton. As she tells it, during a visit to the Indonesian studio of dancer/choreographer/painter Sardono W. Kusomo, Tipton was stunned by the light-infusing 30-foot-tall painted scrolls. Sardono is among a growing number of choreographers who translate dance into a permanent expression, blending movement with paint. Sardono and Tipton decided to collaborate, and L.A. will see the world premiere of their Rain Coloring Forest , the product of a residency hosted by REDCAT, which also involves five of Sardono's dancers; composer David Rosenboom; and video/animation artist Maureen Selwood. The black-box theater has been forested with hanging paintings to be explored by these masterful collaborators and their fortunate audience. Like Tipton, prepare to be stunned.
