But Can They Sing "Aba Daba Honeymoon" After a Few Beers?
When it comes to putting on a show, nobody beats the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles. Their programming runs the gamut of vocal music -- folk, classical, world, contemporary, opera, spirituals, electronica -- if it can be sung, they'll sing it. And this week's concert, Sure on This Shining Night, is particularly adventurous. One of the highlights is the world premiere of John Tejada's "The End of It All," for choir and electronica, with the composer on electronica. How this pulsing minimalist techno work will translate to voice is fascinating to contemplate. Another showcase is the chorus' critically acclaimed Harvey Milk Schools Project, a moving mixture of music and spoken word that the Chorus presents in L.A.-area schools to "promote equality and acceptance and raise awareness about anti-gay bullying," a scourge afflicting 85 percent of LGBT students in American schools today. The program also includes Morten Lauridsen's transcendent "Sure on This Shining Night"; the exquisite tenor-baritone duet, "Au fond du Temple Saint," from Bizet's opera Pearl Fishers; Pavel Chesnokov's "Spaseniye Sodelal"; Eric Whitacre's "Lux Aurumque"; and works by Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi and others.
