SOMETHING DISNEY THIS WAY COMES

For a studio best known for its animated features, Disney has a pretty wildly diverse and celebrated back-catalog of live-action family films, some of which were deemed outright daring in their era. Many of the slightly more intense titles the Mouse House produced in the '70s and '80s — including The Black Hole and The Watcher In the Woods — were more or less shunned by the studio after they met with criticism and poor ticket sales. Times change, thank goodness, and "official" fan club D23 and ArcLight Hollywood seek to celebrate some of these winsome titles with their "Classic Disney Movies" month. The Monday night programs kick off this week with the excellent Ray Bradbury adaptation Something Wicked This Way Comes, starring Jonathan Pryce and Jason Robards. Later this month, Black Hole screens, as well as more popular sci-fi-themed classics like Escape to Witch Mountain (the original, thanks!) and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Want yet more classics? The other ArcLights will have them, too; head to Sherman Oaks on Tuesdays for classic animation, and Pasadena on Wednesdays for Disney musicals. For tickets, ArcLighthollywood.com; for other titles and dates in the series, http://d23.disney.go.com.
Mondays-Wednesdays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Aug. 2. Continues through Aug. 23, 2010
