THE BIRD IS THE WORD

True to the typical suffering-writer-in-seclusion scenario, Harper Lee hides away in her Alabama home, Boo Radley–style, shunning fans and publicity hounds. But at 84, she's probably mighty tired of people asking, "What does the mockingbird really represent?" Another Harper (Collins, that is) is at the ready to answer those age-old questions and capitalize on her infamous novel at a flock of nationwide locations celebrating the 50th anniversary of To Kill a Mockingbird. Angelenos can migrate to Vroman's to weigh in on the book's many interpretations with Kerry Madden, the author of Harper Lee (Close Up), and meet other Mockingbird maniacs. Refreshments will be served, so sit a spell. Maycomb attire optional. Vroman's, 695 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena; Sun. July 11, 5 p.m.; free. (626) 449-5320. --Heidi Dvorak
