PUT A BID ON IT

Along with being known for its crazy-big music and video inventory, Amoeba Music has developed a reputation for charitable giving. If you're hankering for a weird keepsake or a great night out, the monthly Amoeba Charity Auction offers a cornucopia of surprises from the world of music and pop culture. (Past items have included Slayer promotional underwear, a Jesse Ventura coffee mug, and Brian Wilson box seats at the Hollywood Bowl.) Fortunately for those of us without a trunkload of disposable income, the monetary amounts of the bids don't generally get too high. Amoeba matches all accepted bids up to $1,000, and money raised has gone to organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, the New Orleans Musicians Clinic and Conservation International. Since 2005, the auctions have raised more than a quarter of a million dollars. This Saturday promises to be particularly fun, given that the auctioneer will be stand-up comic Don Barris (pictured; no relation to Chuck or George). In addition to being a Comedy Store regular, Barris is the permanent audience warm-up comic for Jimmy Kimmel Live!, co-producer, co-writer, and star of the legendary cult movie Windy City Heat, and producer, writer, star of the upcoming House at the End of the Street Where People Say You Shouldn't Go Because Something Bad Could Possibly Happen to You.
