Pianist/composer/improviser Bryan Pezzone isn't a guy to march to the beat of anyone else's drummer. "The enemy of a good career is a good job," he likes to say. Pezzone prefers to do his own thing, which, in his case, could be about a million things, from presiding over CalArts' Keyboard Program to performing in so many genres that he's been called the "consummate crossover pianist" of his generation. Then there's fellow musical multitasker James Smith, chair of USC Thornton's Classical Guitar Department and one of the most sought-after guitarists in the world, who's equally at home in jazz, classical, experimental, whatever, and saxophone master Doug Masek, on the faculty of UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music, whose "dazzling" virtuosity, "glowing" color and "magical" artistry have made him a woodwind legend of our time. Put 'em all together and, well, you never know just what to expect, except a memorable musical event. This weekend, Sundays Live presents the three versatile virtuosi in a July 4th concert that will include works by Gershwin, Porter and whoever else they feel like jamming to. One thing's for sure: They'll be making their own fireworks.
