Vampire Weekend

Popular culture is now a few years into the current, insatiable vampire craze, with no signs of abating. Of course, plenty of horror fans long for the days when bloodsuckers didn't have emo haircuts, listen to 30 Seconds to Mars and absolutely, positively did not sparkle. Which is why we adore the New Beverly for hosting the second annual Vampire-Con Festival , starting Thursday, opening with a celebration of swinging '60s bloodsuckers including Roman Polanski's The Fearless Vampire Killers and the Christopher Lee-starrer Dracula Has Risen From the Grave. The excellent vintage ghoulage will continue into next weekend with a night of los vampiros en espanol, including the 1931 Spanish version of Draculafilmed simultaneously with Tod Browning's classic (some would argue that it's better!); and a wild triple-feature of '70s Drac flicks comprising Herzog and Kinski's Nosferatu, the Frank Langella-led '79 Dracula, and disco fang-face George Hamilton in Love at First Bite. Come hungry and dressed to the nines (costumes encouraged!). For showtimes and full schedule information, http://www.vampire-con.com
