In the Heights

"Wuthering" actually means windy not withering. Though the former is prevalent, the latter also applies to Lin-Manuel Miranda's Latino-rap-calypso musical about living and dying in Washington Heights, and trying to get out of a barrio that's poised for gentrification. This is probably the biggest "Latino" musical since West Side Story; on opening night Mayor V. wandered in to check it out. It focuses on the owner/families of three small businesses, and Act 1 is awfully seductive. That seduction wears out in Act 2, when the musical pulls out plot-lines to their breaking point, trying to double the romance and pathos of Romeo and Julietwith injections of honey and bathos.
Tuesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 & 8 p.m.; Sundays, 1 & 6:30 p.m. Starts: June 23. Continues through July 25, 2010
