The term multimedia is tossed around so much that it's become multimeaningless -- it includes everything from Pat the Bunny to 3-D pornography. Every so often, a worthwhile marriage of artistic forms appears, and tonight's discussion by author Bill Boyarsky and filmmaker Peter Jones of the book and film Inventing L.A.: The Chandlers and Their Times , is just that. A stunning Dorian Gray–style portrait of the Chandler family -- publishers of the Los Angeles Times -- both Boyarsky's book and Jones' film unveil an L.A. history that has everything: family feuds and union busting; xenophobia and Establishment snuggling; and the shaping of how we experience history itself. Pulitzer Prize–winning political reporter Boyarsky, who worked at the Times for 30 years, boasts an uncannily canny insight into the workings of the Chandlers, while filmmaker Peter Jones' Emmy Award–winning work focuses on celebrities like Judy Garland and Bette Davis. Moderated by KCET broadcaster Patt Morrison and one of her hats.
