WHO'S YOUR GOLEM?

Some parents let their kids touch the stove so that they learn not to play with fire — and some parents let their children make legendary, raging Hebraic monsters out of clay so that they learn ... about using their inside voice? No clue. But the "Gotta Getta Golem!" Golem-making workshops enable the entire family to sculpt their own golems, at which point you write a story about what your golem does after you've done your God thing. The golem was originally summoned up by Jewish mysticism in the form of a hulking mud monster that protected the Prague ghetto in the 16th century. Now it's become slang for any lunkish dunderhead, much the same way that Santa Claus began his life as a wild creature of Northern nature. Digging up dirt to make mindless monsters is a fairly apt metaphor for L.A.'s celebrity journalism, so enjoy the day's multidimensionalism with someone you love.
