SAVE YER SOUL

Rock & roll may not be a form of CPR, nor can it rescue you from heartbreak or put Mr. Yuk stickers all over the poisons under your sink, but it can make you whole in other ways. To wit: Steve Almond presents Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life (Random House), his new memoir that doubles as "a book by and for the fanatics among us (with bitchin' sound track)." It's a memoir that recalls the days when a rock band's audience was dotted with the glow of cigarette lighters instead of cell phones, or the even hoarier pre-punk ethos that declared that it wasn't just anyone who could attain rock sainthood. They had aces then — and Almond writes about rock stars as though they were latter-day saints. Boozing, philandering, talented-yet-damaged fuck-ups — but, via the healing properties of rock music, saints nonetheless.
