THE WAVE IS ON

Fans of television's hit So You Think You Can Dance have a last chance to see new works by a trio of the show's top choreographers — Mandy Moore, Sonya Tayeh and Travis Wall — plus L.A.-based Josie Walsh, as Los Angeles Ballet presents New Wave L.A.After opening in the South Bay to standing ovations, LAB enjoyed a similar reception last weekend at Glendale's Alex Theater and moves to Santa Monica this week to wrap up its fourth season with two final performances. LAB artistic directors Thordal Christensen and Colleen Neary have included new contemporary choreography in each season's finales, but this is the first program devoted entirely to new choreography by young and adventurous dance makers. Moore finds wit and poignancy in "Wink," her exploration of Internet dating, while Tayeh applies her tattoos and Mohawk sensibilities to the back and forth, a study of bullfighting elements en pointe, and Travis Wall's "Reflect. Affect. Carry On." deconstructs the personalities in a conflicted social encounter. Walsh utilizes original music for her Transmutation, expanded from a piece originally commissioned by the LAB Choreographic Workshop last spring. Catch a preview video of the choreographers at work at losangelesballet.org. Savor the real thing with some folks who know they can dance.
