WHO'S YOUR BIG, BAD WOLF?
"Fairy Tales for Grown-Ups." It's a phrase that suggests endlessly stale and/or ribald cartoons in any given '70s men's magazine. On the other foot, there's Cinefamily's "Fairy Tales for Grown-Ups" series, screening The Company of Wolves and Freeway. "Little Red Riding Hood" is tonight's slightly adulterated theme. In the first film, director Neil Jordan's stunning, static 1984 version hinges on Angela Lansbury's matronly warnings to her granddaughter that men literally have wolves inside them and that girls are their favorite taste treat. The real treat, though, is Reese Witherspoon's star turn in 1996's Freeway-- 110 uncut, unrated minutes of endlessly entertaining black comedy and violence. Witherspoon's Vanessa makes this entry in the rape-revenge genre one of its best. Matching wits with wolfish predator and fellow future superstar Kiefer Sutherland on the way down the I-5 to see her granny, Vanessa gleefully inflicts as much damage as possible on him before the surreal, pulse-pounding climax.
