WINDY CITY WALKERS DON'T BLOW

With a reputation built on an energized blend of jazz and modern choreography, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is a good match with the eclectic background of its new artistic director, Glenn Edgerton. That name should sound familiar. After a stint as a lead dancer with the Joffrey Ballet when it was the Music Center's resident dance company in the 1980s, Edgerton spent 15 years in Europe as a dancer and then director with JiÅ™i Kylian's Nederlands Dans Theater before returning to L.A. in 2006 to head the Colburn School's dance program. Those European dance theater influences are apparent in the triptych of works Edgerton selected for the company’s Music Center debut. Most notable is Kylian's rarely seen 27'52". The title refers to its length -- 27 minutes, 52 seconds -- with movements stated, expanded, then rewound with a dreamlike quality enhanced by a floor that is as moveable as the dancers. Set to music by Arvo Pärt, Ohad Naharin's Tabula Rasa has a tidal quality as waves of dancers surge across the stage. For Walking Mad, Swedish choreographer Johan Inger sets the dancers inside a fencelike structure and employs Ravel's Bolero as the dancers come over, through and into the fence. Special bonus: Edgerton will discuss the company in the Dance Talks series one hour before each show.
