What do you get when you combine Fauré and Mozart, add some Bernstein and spice it up with Farber? Pacific Serenades’ version of A Mixed Up World. “We have works by a 20th-century American, a French composer who straddled the 19th and 20th centuries, an 18th-century Austrian composer, and an Israeli composer who has made her home in Los Angeles," says Pacser director Mark Carlson. In other words, a little something for everyone. The program’s highlight is the world premiere of Sharon Farber’s Bridges of Love, a musical setting of three poems about unconditional love — one from The Book of Ruth, one by Helen Keller, and the last by the Sufi poet Rumi — performed by the virtuoso ensemble of clarinetist Gary Gray, violist Roland Kato, pianist Robert Thies and tenor Shawn Thuris. Farber, an accomplished film and TV composer who began her musical career in Israel as a concert pianist at the age of 7, says of her new work, “I wanted to set music to poems about love, nonromantic love; love that is almost against all odds. Because I believe that love, as music, can bridge the gaps of faith and religion.” Other works include selected songs for tenor and piano by Fauré, Mozart’s Trio in E-flat major, K. 498 for clarinet, viola and piano and Leonard Bernstein’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano.
