Ask them what their genre is, and the answer will probably be: "noise." That's what makes the musicians featured at REDCAT's annual CEAIT Festival so intriguing. Under the umbrella of that admirable equal-opportunity explorer, the CalArts Center for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology, they can create just about anything and call it music. Or is that "sound art?" Anyway, the 12th annual event concludes with a program intent on destroying convention and any old boundaries beyond which music once feared to tread. United under the banner Better Than Future, Casey Anderson, Scott Cazan and Elisabeth McMullin deliver "electronics and laptop interpenetrations." Visual and sound artist Steve Roden, who explains his process as "using various forms of specific notation and translating them through self-invented systems into scores, which then influence the process of painting, drawing, sculpture and sound composition," presents a multimedia performance that adds new aural and visual dimensions to the minimalist images of Donald Judd and Texan desert landscapes. And the ever-evolving Carla Bozulich (The Geraldine Fibbers, Evangelista, Ethel Meatplow), whose work could be described as a free-form musical journey in which nothing and everything are constantly happening, is on hand as Bloody Claws to deliver the "smashing" finale.
