Back in the early ’80s, when the parents of everyone in High School Musical and Twilight hadn’t even met yet, the reigning teen movie queen was a pouty and unconventionally beautiful redhead who played every role, from prissy rich girl to awkward and forgotten 16-year-old, and always managed to get the guy. For aging mall rats who’re forever stuck somewhere between Benetton and Orange Julius, Susannah Gora’s You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried: The Brat Pack, John Hughes, and Their Impact on a Generation is a tribute to Molly Ringwald and her Brat Pack brothers and sisters. Gora, a former Premiere magazine editor, chronologically analyzes every Hughes flick and beyond, and interviews all the key actors — most importantly Gedde Watanabe (forever Long Duck Dong, the foreign exchange student from Sixteen Candles), as well as directors Cameron Crowe, Joel Schumacher, Amy Heckerling and James L. Brooks. Not surprisingly, the reclusive Hughes is absent; he died before the book was completed. But don’t cry. It’s bad for your complexion.
