BOOKS -- THEY'RE LIKE KINDLES BUT MORE FLAMMABLE

In this age of Kindles, iPads and iBall (text that is projected straight onto your eyeballs --coming 2012), the California Antiquarian Book Fair is a quaint idea -- a grand, beautiful spine-tingling affair. I own a first edition of Stuart Little. Take that, e-readers. Books, especially old ones, are still the literary experience many of us prefer. Along with rows of lovingly handled rare tomes, this year features a special "From Author to Oscar" exhibit with such items as a photo of Frank Sinatra and Montgomery Cliff posed with James Jones and a copy of Jones' From Here to Eternity. (Bet Ol'Blue Eyes never even read it.)
