BEFORE THERE WAS MAPPLETHORPE
Tomorrow's Man, John Palatinus' exhibition at Antebellum Gallery, is a retrospective of his vintage male physique photography, a discipline that espoused a kind of artistic study that was baldly homoerotic in focus. Palatinus and a small cadre of photographers emerged as a whole new world of men's magazines evolved, and the Eisenhower '50s were dangerous times for these artists -- arrested and stamped out of business, as was Palatinus, his studio seized and dispersed both by the post office and NYPD. Like hippies or suffragettes, the physique photographer suffered for his individuality -- a misery that's almost inconceivable in a 21st century, when orgies of freedom continue throughout culture on a regular basis. Whereas most of his peers have died or faded away, Palatinus will be in person at the opening, as will models posing throughout this bacchanalia of nostalgia.
