THAT'S THE POIGNANT
Exploring themes of identity and posterity along the same lines as vanished contemporary Robyn Whitlaw and ultimate successor Tracey Emin is Barbara T. Smith's exhibition Old Shoes: "Performance Relics, 1968-75 , which closes at The Box on Saturday. Meditating on tradition, media and pop, T. Smith's work isn't as brutally obvious as a six-day orgy or a bullet to the shoulder. Perhaps her most poignant action is "Plots," in which she plants little succulents in fields she knows will soon be plowed over -- a beautiful anomalist statement that crystallizes the ephemeral nature of art most eloquently.
