MANILOW MELODY MADNESS

You say you love Tenacious D's "Fuck Her Gently" but can you hum a few bars? But, when “Mandy” wends its way into your elevator’s music, let's face it: Barry tunes give you a lift. No one wants to admit that they’re uncool enough to like Manilow's music, but with more than 80 million records sold, someone is listening. So listen up closet Fanilows: You can get your Barry fix and some postholiday cheer at the Troubadour Theater Company’s Frosty the Snow Manilow , a kooky, entertaining play for the entire family. Lest you think this effort is a gimmicky attempt at cutesiness, the "Troubies" have been producing quality theater for 14 years, with adaptations of classics and original works. "After taking my 80-year-old grandmother to Vegas two years ago to see Barry Manilow at the Hilton, I knew we had to do this," says director Matt Walker, whose credits include Second City Improv and the Royal Shakespeare Company. "Troubie shows are a collective effort," he says. "I usually take the source material -- in this case the animated Frosty special and Barry songs -- and put them into a working script. Then we turn the actors loose." If those homoerotic statues in Mary Poppinsaren’t your idea of family entertainment -- not to mention the ticket price -- try Frosty .
Wednesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 4 & 8 p.m.; Sundays, 4 & 7 p.m. Starts: Dec. 11. Continues through Jan. 17, 2009
