THE POLITICS OF DANCING

Art imitates life with the ultimate mash-up that is DJ Ipek, at the Hollywood Standard Hotel. The daughter of Turkish immigrants, she's a lesbian Muslim living in Germany. Cognitive dissonance goes boin-n-g! Sensationalism aside, put your hand over the labels and read the content of Ipek's (nee Ipek Ipekcioglu) character: a top-notch producer and DJ, she's here as part of "Rise & Fall," the Goethe-Institut's event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her particular raison d'etre consists of sounds from Bollywood to Hollywood and beyond. A staple of the Berlin club scene since the '90s, her 2006 album Beyond Istanbul was feted by Rolling Stone as something "free of blinkers and ideology" -- and if anyone knows from ideology, it's Rolling Stone. So what if the Commies lost the Cold War? So what?! So let's dance!
