LATTER-DAY PUNK

How punk rock was it of New York Dolls bassist Arthur Kane to turn into a Mormon librarian? Bet his bandmates didn't see that coming. Or maybe they did. Robyn Hitchcock even wrote a song about Kane, "NY Doll": "I found myself in the church/ I needed something/ Bigger than the world I knew/ But in the library of your memory/ People live in their books/ till the pages close/ Close on me like they're gonna/ Close on you." Ouch. His widow, Barbara Kane, reads from I, Doll: Life and Death of the New York Dolls, which covers the Dolls' first 16 months of "too much, too soon."
