TAKE THE FIFTH TOUR

Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. You've heard it a million times. But when Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra music director Jeffrey Kahane takes you on a "musical tour" of one of the top 10 most-familiar classical works, you just might feel like you're hearing it for the first time. At least, that's Kahane's goal with Discover Beethoven 5, an in-depth exploration designed for symphony geeks and novices alike. "We wanted to delve deeper into great symphonic treasures with our audiences in order to deepen our understanding of how these musical miracles work their magic," explains Kahane, who'll juxtapose excerpts of other Beethoven compositions with the composer's writings in order to answer questions like, Why is the Fifth Symphony in the key of C minor and not some other key, and what does it mean for a work to be in a key? Heck, I studied music for years and I'd still like to know. The evening also includes a complete performance of Symphony No. 5 by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and a Q&A with Kahane and the musicians.
Sat., Nov. 7, 8 p.m., 2009
