SCREEN GEMS

It's a timeless telly debate in the grand tradition of Dick York vs. Dick Sargent: Which Mystery Science Theater 3000 humanoid did you prefer, Joel or Mike? Now while Mike Nelson is typically unfairly judged simply for being "the newer guy," few will argue that Joel Hodgson brought a particular dopey-sweet chemistry to the cheesetastic-film-riffing of that show's one-guy-and-two-'bots-talk-smack formula. For fans of the original MST3Kcrew, the current live tour of Cinematic Titanic is required viewing. Hodgson and his fellow teammates Trace Beaulieu, J. Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff and Mary Jo Pehl arrive at Largo this week for three nights of vintage, live snark aimed at the very best in schlock cinema. There really should be a door prize for anyone who comes dressed as Torgo from Manos, The Hands of Fate, but don't let it stop you if there isn't. Halloween's nearly here, after all.
