Ian King pledged my fraternity at USC a year or two after I'd graduated. During all my encounters with him, he not only struck me as hostile, but seriously disturbed. Brothers told me numerous stories of his starting fights on the row and around campus. Many alumni, myself included, encouraged the active members to blackball King ASAP, before he committed a heinous act that would bring an otherwise strong organization down. Eventually they did let him go, and when King attempted to rush other houses, the word was put out that he was trouble, and he again found himself a man without a country, which, if this article is accurate, seems to be the story of his f***ed up life.
What really shocks me while reading this excellent article, is how his family and what few friends he had did little aside from enable this disturbed individual, instead of intervening and trying to get him treatment that he obviously needed desperately. I put his father and mother on top of this list, who are just as guilty as their son, for letting a monster loose on society.
I hope Ian spends the rest of his days either behind bars or heavily medicated. Suffice to say, I rested much easier after I heard his 20 year sentence had been passed.

Hey Jon,
I have no idea who you are, and apparently you do not know me. If you did, you would know I am not in charge of LASPD, and our department is running just fine. Mr. King is serving his jail term. I have no idea why you are hostile towards me or LASPD. If you ever want to talk about it, you know how to reach me.

Jon 12/11/2010 5:44:00 AM
Hey Joe Footdale, if you and your band of retard cops were "good" people, you would have kept the department in working order. You are just as mentally ill as Ian King, and I hope you and everybody you know gets burned down.
-
Jon 12/11/2010 5:35:00 AM
Better hope I never decide to move to L.A. So many people named in this article deserve to be executed. I would straight up kill Ian King with my bare hands if he EVER is released from prison. And the people responsible for his released would suffer as well.
Some of the people responsible for this mess are still working for the school district. Why don't you citizens ACT instead of doing NOTHING.

I definitely agree that there needs to be a deeper more extensive backgrounds check before hiring officers, because I feel that anyone can sign up and apply to this department and pretend to be honest and clean and once they are hired, feel they can be themselves and not take honor in their job. I also believe that officers needs to be disciplined to the fullest extent in order to set examples on other fellow officers. Because all this talk about one bad apple is really just someone's opinion because reality is, how do we know if other officers are doing similar things out in the field but just haven't been caught. Makes you think twice....

It is time that these pervs, who often prey on young girls across high schools get exposed for their perverted ways. They are ashamed of being school police reason why they purport to be in "Law Enforcement" instead of school police. I can not believe that they are in denial of being the laughing stock of all agencies. LAPD rejects.

LAUSD classified emp 10/04/2009 3:01:00 PM
LAUSD police do a good job when they concentrate on their mission as school resource officers and juvenile investigators. Some LAUSD PD types, the SWAT wannabes, got a big head after Kerstein showed up. They need to read 830.1PC, especially those LAPD wanna-be types who have the copycat 3+1 rank (2 stripes and a star). School police SWAT teams! You have to be kidding. The school police SWAT types think they are the real police but don't have the professional skill or experience (training doesn't mean anything). I saw one weak 3+1 who thought he could run a bomb threat scene just because it was at a school, and he had some training, and interfered with LAPD who actually knew what they were doing- what, does LAUSD police have a bomb squad, too?. The wannabe got rude and obnoxious and an LAPD sergeant finally had to tell the wannabe to get lost. That LAUSD jackass deserved an IA for interfering and embarrassing LAUSD PD like that but the LAPD guys were "old school" and did not want to go to paper- they figured that the LAUSD 3+1 had made a big enough fool of himself and laughed it off (LAPD are used to dealing with idiots, even school police SWAT wannabe cops). The good LAUSD PD officers stay on the campus, focus on the students, and can prevent juvenile crime; I have seen good school police cops hear a description from a robbery and know exactly who it was, and who his accomplices were, and had the kids in custody in a few minutes- good detective work that LAPD can't do because they don't know the youth culture the way that LASUSD PD does. If you want to know what's going on among the youth in your neighborhood, ask the on-site school cop- they have the latest and use that rapport to stop trouble and quickly end it if it starts. That's why school police need to stay in the school and need to recruit officers who are interested in working with juvenile crime, not SWAT wannabes. If you want to be the street police, then join the street police- LAPD is hiring laterals (SWAT wannabes need not apply).

Ok it's time to grow up and be adults. I know both of these 2 dispatcher's that have been mentioned in the comments. And for the comments that mentioned both should be terminated, well I don't agree! I think one of them needs to be professional and to respect herself and her job. Granted there have been negative comments on both dispatcher's and about them airing their dirty laundry out in the open. But the latest comments have really gone overboard about Lydia, and her son. I can tell you Lydia, has continued to be professional specially during this "DRAMA BULLCRAP" she takes her job very seriously. And has not replied to any of the negative comments about her or about her son nor has she aired out her personal business if I was her I would have gone off along time ago. But she respects herself and her job. Lydia keep your head up and continue doing what your doing, and that's being the professional lady that you are, I know it must be hard for you. But that's why your a professional because when your at work your there to do your job. Well that's all I have to say about Lydia.
Now to Liz, there have been cements that appeared that you made or replied to. I can't say if you did it or not or someone else did it make it seem that it you. And regarding the comments about you if you know there not true then brush it off and be professional, don't accuse other people, a lot of people would not know the nick names you use if you did not tell them But there is one lesson you really need to learn, and it's called privacy keep your affairs to yourself. And there is no reason why you should be so loud in the work place.when I call in for a report number, or to speak with the w/c I can hear you in the background c'mon now.
Both of these dispatcher's do a great job! But like I said one needs to learn how to be professional
-
Just checking your website 10/02/2009 8:22:00 AM
I was just reading through some of these entries because honestly, I had nothing better to do. This is amazing! It's actually better than a soap opera. As an outsider looking in by reading these comments, I wonder where the managers are for these dispatchers. How did they get hired? And why are they still employees?
It's a shame that the other employees who do their job and do it well are involved in these petty fights.
Shame on you dispatchers. Go in to work, when you cross those doors and put on your dispatcher hats, act professional and smile from the teeth out and act like the professional upstanding women that you are.
I don't want to know that my hardworking taxpayer dollars are going to bickering girls that maybe belong in one of the kiddie schools our hardworking police officers service.

V. Perez 09/30/2009 5:15:00 AM
Reading the article brought back a lot of memories. Many things that were said are true and many things that were said are not true. LASPD is a really good department, there is no doubt about that. Yes the department needs change and it may not come as soon as many would like. I know a lot of the older generation of officers like the traditional ways of doing "police work", but you have to keep in mind times are changing and our youth are getting smarter. The way police work was done can not be practiced in this day of age. Everyone needs to find a happy medium so that you can make it a great place to work. You guys have the opportunity to make the change because 60% of adult crime is committed by juveniles and guess what, they go to LAUSD. I can tell there is a lot of frustration within the department, but remember something, the grass is not always greener on the other side. I like where I am, but there is not a day that goes by that I don't miss my friends. I left for reasons that I knew if I stayed I could never achieve at this department. I have met some wonderful people within this organization that I still continue to keep in contact with after all these years. I'm sadden to see so much negativity amongst many of you, but I hope all of you take this as a learning lesson. Again I believe LASPD is a good place to work because yes everyone of you make a positive impact within law enforcement. For those that are angry at the department, maybe it's time for change for you, but again remember, the drama is every where. I wish every one well and hope everyone keeps there head up and continue to delivery the great service you have done over the countless years.

Lydia,
Please accept my apology for our colleagues, that have nothing better to do with there time but to disrespect you, and Liz. Granted I can't confirm or deny if Liz made any comments or not. Lydia I have sat down and spoken to several officer's about the comments made. We have so much respect for you.You have been very professional during all this bullshit drama. You have every right to be rude, disrespectful over the phone, radio, and in person not knowing who's making these comments. We can tell you have a lot of respect for yourself and your job it was very nice to hear you on the radio being professional and polite even to ones that supposedly made comments about you.Lydia you are a true professional and we ask you to keep your head up and ignore all the comments don't know you personally but it would be nice to know whom I'm speaking with when I call the Watch Commanders office. Lydia one of the officer's I spoke with knows you and your family personally. And for those of you that don't know Lydia she does not live in a cardboard box she has a home in Simi Valley, and in Sedona Arizona. Lydia know that your son is in our prayers. Liz I really can't say a lot about you other then to keep your head up and be a little more private in your personal affairs. You'll get a lot more respect.

Liz 192 you are a disgrace to the job. You are a whore. Stay off your phone texting at work, and talking on the phone. Stop chasing behind all the men that Lydia already had. Why do you want to mess with all the men who liked her first? She was the only person who was nice to your ass... Your clothes are to small for you and stop sending mdc messages all day. The mdc is not j-date. Conner is old and ugly, creepy too. We all saw the call for service for your house when Caruso was at your house, and we know Nelson gave you the tip that units were on the way. Have some self respect whore......

Employee in the Communications 09/27/2009 4:08:00 AM
As an employee that works closely with all of these individuals I must say that I have never seen such disrespect for the workplace, and invasions of other peoples business. However, the department in general is a good place to work, and has unfortunately had some issues. These issues DO NOT differ from any of the issues in other law enforcement agencies. Just because some people may have made some bad decisions in their personal lives does not make them bad people in general. Nor does it make them bad employees for that matter. My wish for the communications cneter is that some people will learn to be a little more private in their afairs. Lydia, I am sorry about you son. Those of us who chose not to participate in the drama wish for the safe and speedy recovery of your child. Liz, you do need to be a lot more private in your affairs, and not discuss your personal business with everyone and around everyone. It would help to minimize the drama that is taking place in the communications division and throughout the department. Nat, you are egotistical, and rude with a lot of people. However you know your job, and you do it well. Nelson, congrats on the baby and try not to chose sides in situations, otherwise you are pretty cool. Leah, you lost your child (sorry), and I wouldn't be at work much either after that. Good to see that you have a second chance. Murcedes, continue to pray because we all need something to hold on to, and if you wanna spray for bugs, then spray away, you have to be just as comfortable in your workplace as anyone else. Martha, your clothes are fine, and if anyone suggests otherwise, then they should take you shopping for something that is more suitable for them. Maureen, you are cool, laidback, and professional. Good job hun! Eleza, you are awesome, I don't know why anyone would say that you want to be white. Some people aren't happy with themselves but you are a good person and you do your job. Chris, it's great that your clueless, because who the heck really wants to deal with all this drama. Marc, you are the man, keep the place as live as you want it. Manny, you are so sweet, and a hard worker. All these issues are irrelevant and have nothing to do with anyones work ethic. Therefore, stop the rumors! Min your own business! Get some business of your own! By the way, we all miss work a lot, there are no FMLA queens and kings... everyone is dealing with life.... GET OVER IT PEOPLE!

To disgusted officer of long beach it's apparent you have not comprehend what you've read in regards to the so called two bitches one of these females"Lydia" has not commented or mentioned her son Joshua,or aired her personal business on this open forum.some other low life did.I have spoken to one of her fellow dispatchers she is very upset that her son was mentioned no one knows the extent to her sons medical issues and what she and the father are going through. It was very low class for anyone to mention the kids. And as far as for "Liz" if you know her you will then know she is very open with her affairs. As far as the K9 unit the are a few bad apples mayoral is one, but most of all jimmy is the major cause he is defiantly no saint he's such a brown noser and that's why he's never punished for his actions. But I do have to give credit to the k9 officers for working so diligently on fund raising other units in the department should stop complain on why the k9 unit has money in there account. I think it's time to stop airing the department business. we are only making ourselves look like little children so please let's stop with these outrageous comments. And move forward to fix the damage that these comments have made on our department.
-
Disgusted Officer 09/26/2009 4:43:00 AM
Damn! You bitches take off the gloves and embarrass yourselves. You are both lowlifes because you involved the kids. Shame on both of you, you both should be terminated for putting your business out there. Its the useless unsupervised K9 unit that has caused all this Jerry Springer drama. It all started when the Chief let Mayoral get away with his sexcapades. Mayoral takes his K9 to his beat wife's house and her pits tear it up, causing thousands in vet bills. What did he get? Nothing...It gave the rest of the K9 trolls the green light to hook up with two legged dogs. I'm out of the loop because I never knew we had a pig unit. What's are requirements? Being desperate and sexless. The whole K9 unit is a bunch of ego maniacs that should be disbanded because instead of chasing code 30's, they chase nasty ass lowlifes.

LASPD is a f..........joke of a department. It's like a scene from Super Troopers. WTF! A training officer giving a lecture to a trainee and "bam!" he shoots the window of another car! This place needs REFORM! WTF........ working @ police department where the officer has to use their own POV to do police work. Might as well gives a light bar so we can pull traffic. What is this, the principal wants to to do supervision instead of police work. Officers responding code 3 for a fight....... Let does MF's beat each other up. Just make sure to pick up the trash later.

We need change now. Bring in the Sheriff's Department. We are becoming a laughing stock. We would get the respect we deserve if we were Sheriff's Deputies. We would have the equipment we need and have full time special units that do not rotate.

Obviously Reform, you still have no clue...
Most Cities in L.A. County ARE NOT contracting with/patrolled by the Sheriff's Department. Try getting your facts straight.
Also, the people who work the agency you want to reform don't do well with contracts; reading righting or administering them. You want Beaudry to be in charge? They aren't now and will have even less control if they were to contract with the Sheriff's Department.
Oh, by the way, if the services provided under those contracts are so good, why are cities and the Community College District unhappy?
LAUSD needs to clean house internally and put a leader who understands discipline in place. With that and treating the Department in a fair and equitable manner, you could easily clean up the BS.
Try having a clue...

I read the story, and have been reading the comments. My dad was a cop in Chicago. They went through some scandal in the 60's, some was right, and some was wrong. One thing my dad remembered was how the cops stuck together when the papers were opening up on the department. I read this stuff some of the people who might be cops on this page and it makes me wonder where is your comraderie? If I had kids in the LA schools, after reading this I would put them in private school. I think you guys are acting like a bunch of knuckleheads. If the sherifs dept wanted to take over, none of the guys who posted negative stuff here should be allowed to go.

Reform 09/19/2009 10:24:00 PM
The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has an international reputation for quality policing. Officers from departments from around the world come to the Sheriff's Department for training, and officers from the Sheriff's Department routinely travel to countries around the world to guest instruct at their training academies.
As far as service promises, a "contract" is called a "contract" for a reason. It is a legally binding document that holds all parties accountable. If a service is not spelled out in the contract I would not expect to receive it. There are many highly qualified people at LAUSD that can study the intricacies of any contract and ensure that all police services requested are spelled out, along with their associated costs.
This is not rocket science or new ground. The majority of the cities in the county are policed by the Sheriff's Department and are very pleased with the service. After all, entities are always free to choose another form of policing if they are not satisfied.

Reform, you obviously haven't seen how the Sheriff's Department promises all kinds of services in their contracts and then never provide or charge extra for them.
They're not known as the kings of the kiss-off for nothing....
-
Reform 09/19/2009 9:38:00 AM
Disband this department and contract with the Sheriff's Department. They already police the community college system. They have several SWAT teams and other specialized units for the officers who want that, and for the officers who want to patrol the schools they can stick to that. You will get a higher quality of service.

Well! It seems that Rueben Zacharias, former Los Angeles School Superintendent was arrested by the CHP on July 23rd for using a Los Angeles School Police badge and ID card to pull a woman over. He told her that he was a cop, according to the AP report dated Friday September 11, 2009 at 6:01 PM. Curious timing, eh?
Was he just throwing his weight around or did he want to rape and kill her? I intensely dislike phony cops.

Too bad most posters failed to comprehend the point of the article. And because they do, they attack the credibility of the writer or paper. Same tactic management of this department uses on the rank and file. This article is on the failings of the leadership of the department. How their decision making process is failed. And how it failed to hold accountable those command staff individuals who did not uphold policies. They chose to play politics, choosing friendship, drinking buddies, military service, or golf buddies to guide their decision making process. It is mind blowing how one deputy chief was allowed to be late over a year, but don't have an officer on the late list because all hell breaks loose. And for what, we're 18,000 report behind in imputing into the system. Unfortunately most posters used this opportunity for personal revenge on supervisors who may have done their job. The stories posted here are exaggerations of some truth. It is also individuals trying to knock out the competition in the promotion process and since the Chief is leaving there is going to be promotional opportunities.

WALT 09/11/2009 12:21:00 PM
I hated this article and I liked it. The writer focused on a bad apple. Like many police agencies, LASPD is not immune from mismanagement & chronyism. Which, after 11 years, I left LASPD. I couldn't get a promotion because I wasn't a "yes man". Many of my friends who finally did promote really changed. They became "company men" at the expense of their fellow officers. Well I left and within 5 years I was promoted to Sgt. Boy what a headache that can be (thanks to the consent decree)! I'm still a sergeant who is "for the troops" but I still understand issues like risk management & personnel resource management. IAN KING SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN HIRED!
I knew Ian when he was a student in high school and I was convinced he was up to no good! I was sure he was involved in a credit card theft ring but when I arrested all his buddies, I came up short on Ian. When Ian King became an LA School cop I met him in the field a few times. It was through one of these encounters that I took a personnel complaint against him for misconduct. But I have no idea what became of that. At the time of his crimes in the downtown area, King was working alone because no one on the Department trusted him or would work with him. He should have been banished to the "key detail" of the watch commander's office! This article was unfair to the hard-working officers, past & present of LASPD who put their lives on the line to protect the public!
Essentially, the LA School Police are a vital link between the kids and safe schools. It is unfortunate that what happened with King happened at all. But LAPD had its Rafael Perez & David Mack! Let's hope the LASPD can get leadership that has the vision to be the best that it can be! You guys deserve the respect! I miss my comrades in blue. P.S. even though this is the LA WEEKLY's forum.. remember guys... it's the "LA WEEKLY"!

Apparently, you guys just don't get it. You don't want to listen to good advice. DO NOT AIR YOUR DIRTY LAUNDRY ON A PUBLIC FORUM. All of the allegations by the columnist are easily explained.
1st, those so-called mislaid guns? When the dept changed from .38's to Berettas, the officers were given the option to purchase their old dept issued gun. The same is true about the Berettas after the dept changed to Glocks.raise funds to buy new guns. Every dept in the country does this same practice so they can Enough said.
You guys need to let the right people address this in the right forum. Stop naming people and their problems to embarass them. This type of attitude is why I'm not there anymore. You guys are like a bunch of children.
With your attitudes, I wouldn't blame the school board if they did disband the dept.

Doesn't Matter 09/09/2009 11:00:00 PM
I'm having a problem with understanding why you guys are even taking the time to entertain this negative report about our department. We are the same ones that don't want to go back to 5/8's, maintain as a 24/7 department, and show that we are an essential asset to LAUSD but yet you are fueling the fire with more reasons for them to second guess us and decide if we are needed or not. Please remember that its a recession right now and jobs aren't easy to come by. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
Eventhough I agree with alot of the comments, why ever would I put myself in a position to potentially lose what most people are looking for right now (a decent paying job with benefits), especially when I know the article is not based on me. Its solely based on one incompetent officer that should of never been hired. If you don't have more positive comments to say, don't say shit at all because you will be the same ones crying when you're jobless. You're here for a reason and if not, you can always leave. Who or what is holding you back?
-
Joe Footdale 09/09/2009 10:25:00 PM
In nearly three decades of being in law enforcement, I have read many articles, viewed television footage, and listened to radio broadcasts that derogate the actions of law enforcement agencies. Some of the reports are justified, such as the incident concerning Ian King. This was a person who completley abused his authority, betrayed the public trust, and most importantly, committed a crime that will most likely emotionally damage the victim for years to come. But what is important to remember is that an incident such as this does not speak for the entire agency, or its leadership. Ian King passed a required pyschological evaluation prior to employment. The beliefs of him being arrogant, rude, and self-centered should have been seen by whoever conducted his evaluation. Perhaps he was just too smooth and was able to convince the psychologist he was capable of being a police officer. The crimes he commmitted were something he himself manifested, something that was never taught. And while I do not agree with the manner in which the entire King matter was handled, history cannot be changed; we can only draw from it and learn. Other cases such as the LAPD Rampart scandal caused so much attention that the department was forced to be under a federal consent decree. One common bond mostly all media are guilty of is putting a slant on the ethics of the law enforcement agency. This article has to be one of the most egregious I have ever read.
The incident concerning King was an isolated incident. The LA School Police has not been placed under any sanctions. For all intensive purposes, this article is extrodinarily untimely. Therefore one has to ponder the motivation of the author. It is apparent not only he, but certain past or present employees of LASPD have an axe to grind. The King incident occurred over two years ago, yet the writer is sensationalizing as if it occurred last week. And despite the inflammatory content of this article, the LASPD is not "Scandal-Ridden" as the author suggests. The department is composed of a core group of hard working and dedicated personnel. Is there a way to improve the department? Abslolutely! But during the time I have worked for this agency, I have observed that it is very difficult to fight with your hands tied. We do the best with what we have, and quite honestly we do an exemplary job.
After this article was published, there have been several comments posted. Many have obviously been posted by members of LASPD. In some of these comments, they mention names of departmental personnel, and the problems they percieve. I have read examples ranging from bad breath to sleeping with someone to gain promotion. I personally believe the persons who posted these comments are even worse than the buffoon who wrote the article. At least this person had the courage to sign his name to his words. And while true very few people consider the LA Weekly legitimate journalism, those who do read it will see the childish inner bickering going on, and may find some creedence in the convoluted gibberish of Max Taves.
So for those personnel who feel the need to speak out against the department, have the courage to sign your name to your words. Anything less are the actions of a coward. If you are that passionate about making the department a better place, be part of the solution, not part of the problem. And for God's sake, either spell-check or have someone proofread for you. I know many officers who have left LASPD, and very quickly found the grass was not greener, and came back with their hats in their hands. Be proud of who you are, your profession, and back your department when some egghead decides to lash out against us.
-
Elizabeth 09/09/2009 10:18:00 PM
The writer has no credibility. He has written a biased article with unreliable information. He attempts to make officers from the LASPD look like corrupt, LAPD wannabes; which is not true. Just because one corrupt, delusional police officer abused his power and authority, does not mean that all police officers from the LASPD are the same. Furthermore, the actions of one corrupt officer (Ian King) who clearly was never fit to fulfill job duties within a police organization should not serve as an archetype for all officers within the LASPD. The King case is definitely unfortunate and no student, staff, or person in general should have to undergo a situation where they themselves or their rights are violated. People like King give police officers a bad name. Furthermore, aside from the fact that this article only uses one officer to prove that the LASPD is corrupt and that the department is flawed makes the article look like joke. The writer failed to write a credible article on the police department, and should have kept the article on just one topic: Former Officer King (maybe that way he would of kept his credibility).
-
GB 09/09/2009 9:22:00 PM
I was an Officer there for many years. I can tell you first hand that the agency needs some work. Is there a climate of promoting brown noses? Yes. Is the command staff oblivious to the pulse of the dept? Yes. Are the supervisors knowledgable of proper police practices? Yes and No depending on the supervisor. There is a practice of empire building there. Are the Officers (including all sworn personnel there) maliciously hurting the district and public? Not by a long shot.
These are problems you will find in all corporations / police agencies in America. How many of you readers are pissed off because the brown nose got the job you wanted knowing you can do it better?
That agency is full of good cops that want to do a good job. You just have to remember that certain people in the general public don't like cops. This is because we hold them accountable for the misdeeds that they do, and they don't like it. Our job is to take their freedom away from them and nobody likes that. If we come into contact with them, chances are there will be a fine or jail time involved.
You LASPD officers that are airing your dirty laundry here, need to knock it off. Keep it behind closed doors. You are just giving the columnist what he wanted by writing this article. He could've just wrote "the LASPD sucks" and left it at that. You guys would then chime in a complain. The agency is only as good as you make it and portray it.
-
blnK 09/09/2009 12:44:00 PM
You could honestly tell that some cops got on this website and started writing lame excuses to justify their actions. As for them protecting kids from terrorism they are the ones who are doing so. I really think that LAPD should stay out of schools and have other type of enforcement in school that is truly there to protect and serve. It is also amazing how LAPD/ LAUSD PD officers get away with a lot of things, and its rare when they actually lock one their people up, which in the end don't even last that long behind bars. And even if we had a corrupt system and their are flaws well TRY HARDER to make it a better system because it sure is failing. This article should be read by every parent and should be sent to every parent who has a kid in LAUSD.

Does it Matter 09/09/2009 11:17:00 AM
You people should be ashamed of yourself. You are dishing out dirt about the people you work with. The Los Angeles School Police Dept. is already looked upon as one of the worse police departments and, you people who work for the department, are playing right into it. If you can find this much fault in others then what fault are you finding within yourself.
Be men and women about the it...if you are man or woman enough to post this then just go all out and put everything else, you have already did the harm. No-one will ever look up to the School Police and respect us, if we can't respect the people we work with and ourselves. What do your comments tell you about the person you are...
You know all of this wrong is going on and you still want to be employed by LASPD/LAUSD. Where are your morals?
You women and men are already sworn officers, so lateral over to the police department you feel will better suit you. Why waste your time at a department that you clearly dislike. What you School Police Officers which you people are nothing but high paid security guards can't cut it as an LAPD officer or Sheriff.
Better yet, maybe you people are too lazy to do the real work...The school police department is a department for people who care about the safety of kids...not a department that "Oh I am going to work at because I get all the holidays off." You people are a disgrace to this department and the badge.
I agree there are alot of things that need to get changed within the department, but you should never air out the dirty laundry like your doing. You damn well wouldn't air out your personal dirty laundry. Now, I am sure that all of you have done things that you are not proud of and if every Sgt, Lt., Chief, and Offcier gets their business aired then everyone is going to have a problem.
Why help people defeat the company you work for? That's far from being smart. You people need to re-evaluate your life and the reason you applied for the positions you are in. And if you really feel how you feel about these people don't be pussies about it, let them know. It's obvious you people don't like these people and if you truly have a problem with them, pull the person to the side and talk to them, be adults about the situation. You people are acting like these little kids bickering on myspace, but this is just LAWEEKLY.
I believe that if your not happy in the field, department, or job your at then quit and find a new one...or try to make it better. I am pretty sure that you people are sitting on your fat butts trying to think of more people to diss. Take a look at yourself and I guarantee it is not a pretty site.
And if you don't like what I am saying...Really, do you think I even care...good night to all you ignorant people and hopefully you find something better to do with your life...(Oh! a light bulb went off) Why don't all you complainees try to make the department better...just a suggestion...and pls don't say that you tried...because that will be a lie and one person can't do it...it takes a village to raise a child and it takes the department to make things better...
GROW THE HELL UP

I find it interesting how certain individuals have managed to fly under the radar. For example: Lt. Santome and Brooks' call out strategy. That is call out only when I'm caught. Lt. Santome then changed the Department's official uniform in the West Division to pajama top fannels with sweat. Or that he authorized his sergeants to sign their own overtime slips. Or the pass that Sergeant Besunder received for working on his degree when he was assigned to PM watch a few years ago......with the permission of Lt. Denardo, who always took care of his "boys". White that is..Let's not forget Sergeant Besunder who flipped off his supervisor behind his back and only suffered a counseling session with no documentation. No mention of the Deputy Chief Bowman and Sergeant Lynch's connection to the "Turbo" case. Another example of an officer who taught he was above the law. How could "Turbo's" busniess partner, Lynch, not know about his criminal activity? Please....Almost a year later and no charges? The cheating scandal with Lt. Stevens and deputy Chief Anderson. Not to mention the "Central Cowboys" the rouge band of misfits. To see Deputy Chief walking around wearing "their" logo jacket showed how much D.C. Bowman wants to fit in and not be a manager. He's an officer with a D.C. badge. Or Bowman taking kickbacks from vendors at the CopsWest show or insurance agent to name a few......want more, there's plenty more.

I don't care if the article appears to have some biased agenda against "one bad apple" as someone keeps mentioning. Violence against women, on any level, should never be tolerated and should always be exposed. I'm so blown away by the comments that other departments do worse, and that somehow justifies King's actions? Or the inaction of his supervisors? Are you kidding me!?!?
Alternatively, all your noise about "the good" the department does, is justifiable. But any organization that permits these types of abuses is FUNDAMENTALLY BROKEN. If you work for LAUSD or anyone else, and you find offense- you have an obligation to hold your co-workers accountable. You are there to protect and monitor so we don't have to. Please don't fail us now by simply taking offense. Protect us from all predators, even if they are your brothers.

Honest Tax Payer 09/08/2009 9:46:00 AM
Dear Officer King: I hope you rot in jail. From an outsider's standpoint of the entire LAUSD Police, I disagree with the article at hand. I have personally had to wave at a black & white with the blue letters, in a time of desperation and ended up completely satisfied by an officer who was willing to perform his sworn duty (even though it seems that everything has to be school related at the department). I am shocked that some you officers apparently turn their back on obivous crimes in progress that are away from a campus and ignore a citizen in need of assitance. You need to lose the badge period, not go to LAPD or anywhere else. As an honest tax payer I expect an LAUSD Police Officer to keep their campuses free and clear of crime, including the community. How dare any officer from any agency, let alone a School Police Officer, allow someone walk free with a court ordered arrest warrant or drive a stolen vehicle. Some of you people commenting need to wake up and walk outside of the school fenceline once in awhile to realize the heavy amount of crime that actually occurs outside of a school place. DRIVE BY SHOOTINGS....... HELLO. Do you honestly think that a damn gangster is going to pick out his next shooting victim in his mommy's car. HELL NO. Personally speaking, I am glad that some School Police Officer's are intelligent enough to figure out that keeping their assigned campus clean is to pay attention the idiot criminals that are attacking innocent children while walking home and walking to a school. As for you officers and supervisors that practice blatant ignorance to street crimes and the potential warrant suspect driving a stolen car on a school perimer, SHAME ON YOU!!!! I hope that it is not you or your family that someday need the help of a Policeman and are ignored because it is not near a school or you may get disciplined by your supervisor or flat out only care about an LAUSD campus. Officers like this need to work as an accountant for the LAUSD and protect finances, not my LAUSD children. Finally, I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to all of you School Police Officers that work hard day in and day out! You are the true shining stars of the LAUSD PD.

HEY, LAPD IS HIRING 09/08/2009 8:45:00 AM
The gentlemen callin himself COPS COP is way off base! The next Chief of Police will do exactly what the district pays him or her to do lead a SCHOOL POLICE DEPARTMENT. Not, Then comes along Kerstein. Kerstein took the LAUSD PD where it wanted to go. Kerstein only catered/listened to what the men in uniform of that organization. Cmon COPS COP, would you let your teenage son be in charge of the finances in your home or set the priorities for your family? I should think not! If people inside the LASPD want to keep doing work outside of their assigned schools, theyll only have themselves to blame when the department folds. I bet then theyll wish they wouldve ran less plates, jumped other agency calls and cared about the CHILDREN AND SCHOOLS OF LOS ANGELES!!! COPS COP, you and your partners better start applying as laterals to other agencies or get a new career.

Fan O'Evergreen Report 09/08/2009 3:30:00 AM
Chief Manion could easily improve communications throughout the department by merely distributing copies of the Evergreen Report to all employees. This might help some LAUSD police officers to better understand why the envelope on their paycheck reads Los Angeles Unified School District. KEEP IT REAL.
The following are quotes from the Evergreen Solutions, LLC: Report on Safety and Security in the LAUSD, December 17, 2007. [Establish clear performance metrics for LASPD that align with the departments strategic plan. Page 4-12]
In observing the operations of patrol officers and interviewing several of them informally, Evergreen found that no clear day-to-day performance expectations have been communicated to patrol officers. The departments apparent mindset regarding patrol officers seems to make activities outside of school affairs more a priority than safeguarding campuses and students. The Board of Education recognized this past spring a number of LASPD officers who assisted in stopping a bank robbery in progress. Officers related stories to Evergreen consultants of their regular assistance to outside agencies, including LAPD. The first week of August 2007, CNN reported a police chase in progress that was televised nationally. LASPD officers were involved in this chase although the suspects did not have apparent connection to campus safety. In reviewing the computer logs for some of the patrol officers, Evergreen found that it is not unusual for patrol officers to spend a great deal of time running license plates for vehicles that may be stolen, rather than focusing on campuses and the immediate vicinity.
Campus officers suffer from a similar lack of routine performance measures. In visiting schools, Evergreen consultants observed some outstanding, pro-active campus patrolling by some officers. However, Evergreen also observed officers manning desks in out-of-the-way offices, far removed from the pulse of the campus. Evergreen observed campus officers who never left their offices during key times, such as the start of school. When asked what their supervisor expected of them on a daily basis, campus officers were generally unclear on what kinds of performance measures to which they were expected to be accountable.
Based on a study and data collected June - December 2007.
There have been no changes made to address these issues. How can you be so quick to blame Chief Mitchell when officers were mandated to focus on schools?
What has the current chief and his administration done to address the concerns in the Evergreen Report? Please dont say Chief Manions Five-Year Strategic Plan. That document is flawed to a point of tragedy!
Stand by for quotes available for that waste of paper too.

Regarding Max Taves article " LAUSD's Finest", I remember in the not to distant "dark ages" what it was like as a H.S. student in LAUSD. Gang members, armed, often roamed the campus, and belligerent parents and family members could march into a school or classroom and violently confront a teacher or staff member anytime they felt compelled to do so.
Back then, the incompetent ( and uncaring) Wesley Mitchell was in charge of LAUSDPD, the officer drove blue- purple painted patrol cars, and the on campus officers were treated as little more than lackeys and minions of whatever fickle principal or administrator was in charge( Remember my H.S. vice principal yelling at a School Police officer, and "ordering him" to help a janitor clean up trash- the officer meekly complied)
Today the LASPD is a different animal all together.Like All law enforcement entities, it has its problems, but with a mere 350 personnel, they are dedicated and focussed, and their mostly un-noticed efforts have brought crime down in a majority of L.A. schools. While the article pointed out serious issues that need to be addressed, it failed to state the FACT that LASPD officers are highly trained, and State certified just like LAPD, or other so.California Police officers! Despite what Taves tried to protray, School Police officers have the authority to go anywhere in the state of California to enforce laws applicable to their duties- it was the LAUSD that imposed the useless "1 block radius" limit on their authority.now that they have more assertive management, LASPD officers can be seen patrolling the neighborhoods around schools, preventing students from being harassed, robbed ,or beaten- in my day as a student, you had to know how to fight or run to be safe.
Ask yourself this- Despite the impropriety of Former Chief Kernstein and current Chief Mannion,or the overly re interated story of current jail bird Officer King, Why is it that a dept 1/30th the size LAPD, a dept. that patrols 710 sq.miles(nearly double what LAPD patrols), and has 1 million students, teachers, and staff to protect, has so little occurrence of excessive force or abuse of their power? Stick to your favorite whipping boy LAPD- you'll find the "monsters" behind the badge you really crave hunting for....
Ask yourself this

I dont think we have to point out that Mr. Taves report is not only faulty, but unfounded, hateful and most likely done in an effort to break out of mediocrity in the world of journalismunfortunately for him, it only demonstrates his lack of talent and ignorance in the profession. Again, Mr. King only got what he deserved as he came to discredit all of the people and great accomplishments of this excellent police department I am proud to serve in.
As somebody has already pointed out, we are severely undermanned for the job we are tasked to do. Let me bring out the numbers (approximate, of course). The city of New York has one police officer for every 230 citizens; the city of Los Angeles has one officer for every 435-440 citizens; the Los Angeles School Police Department has ONE OFFICER FOR EVERY 3,000 CITIZENS THAT, YOUNG AND ADULTS that we are here to protect, not including all the other elements that come around our schools with the intention to do harm to our students. Add to that the size of the LAUSD over 700 square miles compared to 450 square miles of Los Angeles and 305 square miles of New York.
We have to patrol well over 1, 100 schools and offices with more being added for the next three years. How can a job of that magnitude be done? However, for years we have managed to do it in an overall remarkably efficient and excellent manner preventing many more injuries and fatalities to our constituents. Not to mention the lack so far of a Columbine type incident even though we have so many criminals in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. How many police officers in other departments have to deal with the not so pleasantly task of doing paperwork and thirteen different police departments? You should try that for starters before you open your mouth in such an irrational way.
However, I recognize we are not perfect and need to continue working towards improvement in providing the best service possible to the students, parents, faculty and administration of the LAUSD. I also know that we cannot please everybody, thus the criticism of some teachers.
I felt compelled to add my two cents because I am feeling disappointed that some of our own members are using this public forum of somebody that has insulted us all to do him a favor and take advantage of concealment to air our dirty laundry and justify some of his claims. I will continue to be positive and do what I can to make this department better so I can always look back and feel proud of it even after retirement.

SOMEBODY PLEASE REMIND THE LASPD THEYRE JOBS ARE TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN, STAFF AND PROPERTY OF LAUSD. IF YOU WANT TO DO MUNICIPAL POLICE WORK THAN GO APPLY SOMEWHERE ELSE. ITS OKAY IF YOU WANT TO FOLLOW A DREAM. JUST STOP RUINING IT FOR THE PEOPLE CAME HERE TO SEVRE THE VERY SCHOOLS AND PEOPLE WHO GAVE THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND GROW. PLEASE STOP RUNNING LISENCE PLATES FOR STOLEN CARS AND FOLKS WITH WARRANTS. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING YOU DO IS RELATED TO OUR SCHOOLS AND MISSION. SOME OF YOU NEED TO BE ON A CAMPUS SO YOU CAN ACTUALLY LEARN ABOUT OUR TRUE CUSTOMERS. IT IS TRUE THE AUTHOR HAS A BEEF WITH AN OFFICER WITH THIS DEPARTMENT. BUT MANY OF THE THINGS HE WROTE ABOUT YOU GUYS KNOW ARE TRUE. I'M NOT A WESLEY MITCHELL FAN AT ALL. BUT,I WANT TO THANK THOSE PEOPLE WHO CAME TO LASPD BEFORE THE KERSTEIN YEARS. YOU MEN AND WOMEN PAVED THE WAY AND ARE WHY WE CAN STILL STAND TODAY. NOT BECAUSE OF ALL THE OTHER THINGS THE LAST TWO CHIEFS AND HAND PICKED PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DOING. THE CHIEF AND HIS CRONIES WILL BEFALL TO THEIR DEVILISH WORKINGS. JUST WAIT AND SEE. GET BACK TO SCHOOL POLICE BASICSIT HAS SAVED OUR SCHOOLS FROM LOOKING LIKE THE REST OF LOST ANGELES. MAYOR TONY VILLAR CAN STAY WHERE HE IS AND AWAY FROM SCHOOL POLICE AND LAUSD. THIS DON'T ADD FUEL TO ANY FIRES...IT JUST TRUTH BEING TOLD.

Reading this story about the LA School District's Police Force brings to mind the so-called Miami-Dade School Police Dept. The Miami-Dade School Police Dept's motto regarding protecting our children doesn't sit well with it's Officers, because they are too busy on county roads-not even within 100 or 1,000 feet of a school and doing traffic stops when school is not even in session and doing radar traps to nail drivers to feed their own egos. It really amazes me that these school districts have their school police when the county should provide police protection for the schools that are in their district and not give a county car, gun, uniform and baton to these rogue cops wo have a police record.

Paul 09/06/2009 1:31:00 PM
I'm a teacher in LA- and I have seen the trememdous waste of money that is spent on the school police. The district could solve their money problems by eliminating this black hole of waste. I have had girls tell me similar stories, not as blatant, but just as wrong, i.e., taking girls into their private office to discuss issues, show the girls the officers private arrest pictures, etc.
Also, these officers are not willing to help staff when property is stolen or a staff member is attacted. Instead, we need to call in LAPD.
Why do these people deserve the same benefit package that Beverly Hills PD gets, when they are not allowed and not willing to do the job.
I could go on and on, but I think my point has been raised. Maybe our mayor could focus on this huge waste of taxpayer money.

Truther Sayer 09/06/2009 11:18:00 AM
First of all lets start off by stating the obvious. The article is a failed attempt at a ground breaking, blowing the lid off, whistle blower story, written to tell the truth. Which it failed at. Everything in the article was on the news years ago. Where was this writer? Someone should have told him this was old news. I blame the editor.
We are all in agreement that Ian King committed a crime and was convicted in a court of law. None of us dispute that and he got what he deserve.
The line officers are all good and hard working officers trying to do a job with one hand tied behind their backs. To understand this department is to take a trip back in time. What most people don't understand and have not been told is that this department was started by a bunch of custodians decades ago with one purpose and one purpose only. To protect the schools from vandals. Decades later you have one of the largest (2nd only to NYPD, which has it's own school police section) school police departments which is trying to safe guard these schools from complete distruction.
The school board honestly needs to clean house and it needs to start at the top. Throughout the years officers have promoted to the ranks of detective, sergeants, lieutenants, and deputy chiefs. The problem is that these same people have never done police work the way it was intended to be done. They got their positions simply because they were able to pass a test. That is easy if they go to a school campus and study all day and never take the time to do actual police work and step out of their offices.
The school police officers of this day become school police officers to make a difference. They take their jobs seriously and go out day after day with the intent of making a difference on these campuses.
The problem is that the school board has never taken school safety seriously. The LASPD is simply "insurance." They are used as window dressing by the school board so that they can say they actually care about safety on these campuses, but they don't. What this article did not cover is that the number of officers have not increased in more than 15 years, yet they continue to build schools and expect the department to find a way to safe guard these campuses.
The department needs true reform. This must start by cleaning house at the top. It is no secret that Paul Quezada and Gwynn Perez are the people behind this article and gave this writer all the "juicy" but old information. Good try. Old news.
Gwynn Perez (former Deputy Chief) is still pissed off that she got shown the door. Get over it. Got pratice law with your law degree.
Paul Quezada (Sergeant) is pissed off that Perez got shown the door and has been looking for a way to get this place disbanded. He is pissed off at the world and has been bounced around the department. Everywhere this guy goes he causes problems. Yet the department never addresses the issue. He has cost the school district hundreds of thousands of dollars in a sexual harrasment law suit and yet was never demoted (which he could have) or given days off after being found guilty. He needs to go. He is never at work and really truly telecommuttes.
Hector Rodriguez (Lieutenant) this guy thinks because he got a doctorate degree on department time he is suited to be the next chief. Wrong! This guy was a failed LAPD recruit who couldn't pass probation over there and was hired here and later spent his entire days playing his guitar at Jefferson HS as the resident officer. This guy paid an officer (initials N.M.) ovetime to take care of his kids while he sat in his officer (at the department) and studied for his classes and wrote his thesis paper. He has never done police work and has been caught in lies and dishonest acts which the department (Nancy Ramirez) has simply looked the other way. He uses his department take home vehicle to attend USC games so he can park closer to the stadium. I think I have said enough. Enough to launch an internal affairs investigation. What am I thinking if they do conduct an I.A. he will skate. School board you should really look into this guy.
Nancy Ramirez (Deputy Chief). Wow! She is so lost and so lacking the skills to run her bureau that she is a lost cause. She honestly needs to go. Never a cop but another person who does well in promotional exams and hence got to where she is because she was given the answers.
Joe Rios (Sergeant). This guy also cost the department hundreds of thousands of dollars in a sexual harrasment law suit and was never punished. Any other agency and he would have surely of gotten days off. He has to go.
Armando Faris (Sergeant). This guy was recently involved in a altercation (fight) as a shapiron for one of his kids trips. He was hit over the head with a bottle and later lied to the department stating he had been involved in a car crash while on the trip. A parent later contacted the department and advised Nancy Ramirez & Larry Manion of the incident. When confronted by the Chief he recanted, began crying and admitted that he had lied. The Chief stated, "we like you Mando, don't worry." Any other organization you get caught lying and you are done. This guy???? Protected. No investigation into any dishonest statements made or giving the department false statements, just told, "don't worry." WOW! Another guy who needs to go.
Luis Smith (Sergeant). This guys is dishonest and has been caught on video tape committing sexual acts in his take home car. No investigation by the department. Wonder why?
Randy Glymph, Julio Lima, Joanna Fontennette (Lieutenants)are all lost. These people couldn't do police work if a criminal landed in their laps with a confession. Enough said.
If this writer wants to really make a difference and help the officers of the LASPD to do a better job let him start by doing an article on those people I mentioned. They are the ones that are holding back this department from doing some actual good.
The department needs to really look at the manner in which it promotes it's people. Simply because they can pass a test (not related to acutal police work, but a grammatical writing test) doesn't make them suited to lead. To honestly make a difference you have to have people who have been cops, gotten their hands dirty and actually arrested hundreds and done the job, so that they could speak with some credibility.
Would you trust a doctor who read the books, passed the tests and never did any hands on practicals?

This article is noting more than trash journalism and its to bad Max did not get his fax straight before this trash was printed!!!!! As a parent of four children that attend LAUSD schools the school police do a great job!!! After reading most of what has been posted here is appears that the officers have no respect for their management. The school board needs to look at putting in place a whole new command staff to have a better run department.

Cops Cop 09/06/2009 1:25:00 AM
There is no one really to blame for this. Simply a smear campaign by a couple of individuals in collaboration. When Former Chief Wesley Mitchell was at LAUSD PD. Typical management style tactics was to utilize scare tactics. This proved most effective and worked for soo many years. With the department evolving and the exit of Wesley Mitchell. The department strived to be more. More-above and beyond the School Police. Then comes along Kerstein. Kerstein took the LAUSD PD where it wanted to go. Kerstein only catered/listened to what the men in uniform of that organization wanted. So he did what every Chief does. Listening to his troops. With that in mind...in combination of his contacts/repore of outside agencies. This caused LAUSD PD to be further recognized rather than a security section of the LA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. There is a good percentage of management that refuted the change in Kerstein's command. While in doing so..slowly but surely after the leave of Kerstein....the department takes a step back another decade. People have to realize, A good chief only does what his organization wants and that is what Kerstein achieved. Soo many people like to forget the positives and focus on somewhat debatable negatives. LAUSD PD is currently a diseased mismanaged department with 50% of management supervisors-Lieutenants and above out for there personal agendas. Kerstein's command had always an open door policy. Soon thereafter Kerstein...with the "implementation" of Manion....the scare tactics management style soon came back.... There is a lack of experience in Management and a lack of repore with outside entities at this organization. Lack of leadership. Don't get me wrong....many MANY of these people in management are great test takers..and great achievers in promoting.....BUT UNFORTUNATELY...that does not count towards the officers advantage in the field.....where you need the EXPERIENCE to manage effectively w/ command presence.

amadour 09/05/2009 10:19:00 PM
How appropriate that you would write on Ian King the lone black mark on a police department with a history of valued service to kids and young adults. You and Ian King have soooo much in common. He gave us (officers) a lurid glimpse inside his twisted psyche when he wrote a piece on himself as the new officer on the campus at a school he was assigned to. It was entitled "New King on Campus." It was a limited manifesto with almost no perspective other than a self serving need he felt to extoll the virtues of being Ian king. It was arrogant, misleading, unprofessionsal, limited in scope and expressed no real redeeming values or real insight into the topic at hand...you know, kind of like that scathing piece you wrote.
The authority to be a police officer in the state of california is granted by that state not the chief of police, lausd, school board or any other source you choose to conguer up. The state only grants these powers after an officer his suffered through a rigorous police academy, passed a battery of test prior to being admitted to that academy, and makes probation with the agency who hires him. This is the standard for every police dept in the state. And yet, losers are sometimes hired in spite of the process...I'm sure it's the same with hack writers who find jobs with weekly propaganda classifieds that provide entertainment to the public. Occassionally, losers make the staffs of every field of endeavor. But, they don't represent the entirety of that profession and the profession should not be judged by them. which brings me to the point of my entry.
The slant of you wayward piece seems to indicate that because we are a small department that we are irresponsibly or inefficiently run. Further, you imply that we are only here because we lack the skills or abilities to work for a larger department. Most police departments across the country are smaller depts staffed by professional police officers who prefer to be a part of a smaller collective of dedicated officers who they share an intimate and fraternal peace with. We are not school police officers by default.
We choose to be who we are and we are very good at it! Despite your yellow journalism, which depicts us as agents of disruption we are the calm that quells the daily chaos that happens thousands of times a week at our public schools. The good kids are our sons and daughters and we protect them as we would our own. The troubled kids are the confused relatives we all suffer with in our families and we counsel them as we would our own. And, yes, sometimes we take them to jail and lock them away because that is the nature of what we do. But, how many thousands of man hours have gone into talking with a child before an arrest occurrs. Check with other departments and find out how much of their day is spent advising troubled kids and young adults. Its a daily part of what we do.
We are unique because what we do is unique, and again, we are very good at what we do! You don't often hear of us-unless their is an Ian King for you to prostitute for your own personal gain. But the parents and staff and Officials at schools know we are there. Not as a thin blue line between us and them but as the thread that is interwoven throughtout the fabric of existence that is the lausd.
Finally, we will rembemer you Mr, Taves! Not in some insidious, nefarious way, you and your flawed piece is not that important or "news worthy!" We will remember you in the way we do the kid who we have conuseled a thousands time against his involvement in some endeavor that will end with his own distruction. unfortunately, everyone of us has that story about what they were doing when they got the bad news about that kid whose irresponsible acts brought about his own destruction. Your article was slanderous and unrefined! It was gossip and incomplete in the way that gossip usually is. It was what one finds in a free pubication because everyone knows what it's worht if you get it for free...nothing! You will eventually choke on your own words once they are illuminated by the power of honest investigation and you will return to the Palisades rag that spawned you.

You know, if I wanted fair and unbiased reporting I would go look at the LA Times. If I wanted coupons to strip clubs or escort information, the LA Weekly is the place to go. Talk about yellow press, only a tabloid like paper would print such a sensational article. The writer has a biased agenda toward the police department, since the writer's days back at the little unheard of local Palisadian Post, but no, the writer didn't address that.

REALLY FROM INSIDE LAUSD POLIC 09/05/2009 9:21:00 PM
Talk about Sgt.s you got several who were idiots as officers to name a few Cunninham [worthless k9]and Stevens and Quesadilla. They never come to work. They drives district car to go do off duty security jobs with district gun and badges also pick up kids and girlfriends on district taxpayers gasoline FREE/WOW. Need to know who Maldanado and Fontenent sleep with???? Sgt. Wall is chiefs on call computer operator and is trying to get him hired as retirement consultant job for technology when he leave. This guy keeps the department succeses at horrible levels because he wont move LASPD past his obsession with File Maker pro software. He ran out one of the best officers Joshua Spry from the unit with his right out stupidity. He need to go out the door with chief Lau Larry, deputys Anderson (kleenex & brown nose) & Ramirez (Wichells and yum yum Tia Grande' y ELA Mafiosa), and Lt. Brooks (severe halatosis and incompetence loud mouth). Brooks was in charge of the backgrounds unit and always passed the blame on Kerstien and Manion for Ian King. He should just stay at home like he already do. He only showup to work when he can be seen at Beudry Building in front of the board and Cortines. They know he smells and is full of it too. He stir up more problems trying to make deputy chief. He probably told the Weekly re: Ian King problems. How come Brooks did not tell about the crony stuff and stupid sgts??? How come union man Ream did not tell about chief manion staff are all white??? Other district departments has black and Hispanic and asian and gay managers??? Why not Larry??? Where was the union on this important issues??? Only two real quality candidate inside the LAUSD POLICE. Superintedent Cortines need a national country search but try avoid a LAPD candidates unless they visionary like him or chief Bratton types. NO MORE ADAM 12 FOR LASPD!!!! Pay a salries to get the best quality chief to keep us focused on safe schools not running stolen cars for people with warrantsthis is not school related stuff. Why did not Brooks tell about this stuff tooKIDS & SCHOOLS ONLY???

LAUSD PD is an outstanding organization. When you have an organization w/ a certan finesse and specialty nothing comes close. There is a certain supervisor that has always intrigued many. Sgt. George Sandoval. This guy puts Micro-Manage on the map. I mean this guy takes it to a whole new level. Not to mention he enjoys and prides himself in Police Knowledge and also taking part as a 1/4 back on the radio to make sure officers in the field are doing things correctly. If you need a go-too guy. He is your man. Non the less he is an excellent example of a Yes-man Company Man.

Wow! Unbelievable. I thought a repective writer was opened minded and wrote the GOOD the bad and the ugly.
This was a total bash not only on the department but all the good officers that work there. It's the most negative article I've ever read.
Although, I imagine that there is some truth to the story, I refuse to beleive it, as it's written....with hate.
Hey Max, are you desparate to break a story? We1l, this isn't it!
It apperas that the LASPD need to make some changes.
It sounds like the only ones who get promoted to the top are the "favorites" or the "Kiss _sses". You know, "the chosen ones" by the cheifs and the ones that score highest on the test??? Give me a break. What else is considered....? I have an idea! How about experience. It's apparent by the comments written that your upper management is not respected. What a shame. I think the Chief should look out for the students and the police department as a whole rather than his favorites. I would bet that there are police officers working in this department that would make better Sgt's., Deputy Chiefs or LT's than what they have know.
So, that's all you need to get promoted? A high test score, connections and a set of lips!
I'm just a private citizen who loves the police. I know all department's are not perfect. I beleive the LASPD is a good department that has good officer's that work to protect the kids and schools. That's too bad Max got caught up in a negative trip.
I hope all in the LASPD continue to work hard. You should be praised for the job you do. If your not doing your job...then shame on YOU and shame on the one that turnes a blind eye to your behavior.

"Ian King this", "Ian King that", all I see in this article is, Ian King blah, blah, blah." The writer only focused on ONE bad apple, just ONE, and yet somehow this discredit of a human, let alone officer, the writer has seemed to state that he represents an accurate portrayal of the dedicated officers that work for the department, which is far from the truth. Its true that Ian King should never have been hired, in fact the department's background unit recommended that he shouldn't be hired. If anything, it was a failure of management, (cough, Kerstein, cough) that hired him.
Ian King was never a well liked person, I've personally heard stories of him from his high school days, and he was not liked or respected by his peers at the department. In fact the only thing I see that the writer got right was his accurate portrayal of King, yes he was arrogant, yes he certainly did "rub people the wrong way." My personal opinion is that King was a moron that lacked common sense. He certainly did give off a "creepy" vibe, and he certainly deserves his prison sentence. If anything, it is my opinion that King should be placed out in the prison's general popluation.
The article is not entirely factual, as far as King being "rewarded" with a patrol spot, that is not true. Yes King was placed on patrol, but he was vanished to patrol to Early Morning watch, thats graveyard, and not the weekends. Keep in mind that this is a department that is mostly day oriented because it is the school police, working a graveyard shift on the weekends. As far as cars being black and white, hello...the vast majority of law enforcement vehicle in the state and nation are painted black and white.
Dont let the writer's point of view influence you. Don't let one officer, or managerial issues, influence your views on the department. Let me assure you, as an Officer of the department, the vast majority of Officers are dedicated and hardworking. If we wanted better compensation, or recognition, we would leave and transfer to a better paid, or better known department, whether municipal or county level. If I wanted to be LAPD, I would be LAPD.

There is a particular school police supervisor-George Sandoval that does a GREAT job in Micro-Managing.
Superlative is an understatement. He is your go too guy and company man. Not to mention playing 1/4 back the lausd school police frequencies. Supervisor at your finest.
