FROM PIER TO ETERNITY
The Web site proudly proclaims "Welcome to the 'World's Famous' Santa Monica Pier." Why the quote marks around "world famous"? What does the pier have to be ashamed of? The landmark turns 100 today (good surgeons), and though the pier folks are planning a big splash for "The Santa Monica Pier Turns 100," a Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corp. spokesperson tips us off: "We do not have a finalized schedule, but the events are due to start at 6 p.m., with a 'reopening,' then a 100-minute party with cake and performances, and finally a fireworks show around 9 p.m. You may visit the Web site closer to the date for more details." Gee, thanks.
