Ipalpiti the Fool Who Doesn't Love This Music
One of the great annual summer treats on the classical music scene is the IPalpiti Festival of International Laureates. In Italian, IPalpiti means "heartbeat," and these amazing award-winning young soloists from around the world have been described as sharing one heart and soul. The "Musical Peace Corps," as it's known, is not only an orchestra but a collection of virtuosi in their own right, all of whom get their chance to shine for 12 days in L.A. starting this week at the Henry J. Bruman Summer Chamber Music Festival. IPalpiti soloists perform two concerts. "Around the World: IPalpiti Artists Play Music of Their Countries," which includes violinists Catharina Chen (pictured) and Sarah Chen performing a work by Norwegian composer Johan Halvorsen (yes, the ladies are Norwegian); violinist Sami Merdinian and cellist Yves Dharamraj firing off Astor Piazzolla's Tango Suite; cellist Kian Soltani performing his own Persian Fire Dance; Spanish cellist Francisco Vila performing Gaspar Cassadó's Suite for Cello Solo; and cellist Askar Ishangaliyev giving us a taste of music from his native Kazakhstan. The second concert includes a work by Rossini and Mendelssohn's old show-stopper, the String Octet in E-flat major.
