Environmental activism really runs the gamut, from the '70s corporate guerrilla vengeance of James "The Fox" Phillips to gentle seed-bombing of fertile empty lots. Occasionally, there are people who, shall we say, really take the idea and run with it. Tonight, L.A. Times editor Dean Kuipers discusses and signs his book Operation Bite Back: Rod Coronado's War to Save American Wilderness. It's the saga of longtime Yaqui activist Rod Coronado and his ‘90s manifestation of Animal Liberation Front extremism vs. fur trappers and suppliers. More hot water: the 2006 Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, which upped the ante for Coronado, who wreaked an estimated billion dollars worth of damage and a purported 1200 acts of sabotage. Coronado was jailed last year for remarks he made in San Diego during a lecture subsequent to an Earth Liberation Front arson fire, so who knows what fur – or fireworks – might fly at tonight's talk.
