Moods for Mods

There’s an abundance of firecrackin’ dance attractions this weekend, but why hop around town when one blowout offers four clubs in one? COME TOGETHER will see some of the city’s best indie beat-fueled dance grinders (past and present) gather and take over both the Echo and the Echoplex: Underground, Hang the DJs, Transistor (which closed last month) and, most notably, the return of Café Bleu. The mod and Brit-pop party that began back in 1996 — first at Checca, later called Tempest (now Crown Bar), and then moved to other venues around town — was easily one of the most vibrant, stylish and just plain fun fetes L.A. has ever seen, with scooters swarming about outside, the grooviest Twiggy-esque frocks both on the go-go podiums and in the crowds, and great “6Ts” soul and pop sounds meshed with the U.K. and L.A. artists inspired by them. Promoters Piper Ferguson and Shalyce Benfell are bringing back most of the original DJs and visuals, plus a photo show featuring pics from the old club. Expect a marvelous, mottled mix of nostalgia from Bleu and modern high jinx from the club kids now carrying the torch. Echo and Echoplex, 1822 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park; Fri., July 3, 9 p.m.-2 a.m.; over 18; $15. www.myspace.com/cafebleushout for more info (including a highly entertaining “memory” blog page).
